Hays Travel founder and former Sunderland vice-chairman John Hays died today, his company has confirmed in a statement.
Founder of Hays Travel and former Sunderland vice-chairman John Hays has died suddenly at the age of 71, his company has confirmed.
Sunderland -born Mr Hays collapsed at the company's head office in the city centre today.

Mr Hays was a member of the Drumaville consortium, led by Niall Quinn, which bought the club from Sir Bob Murray in 2006.
He resigned from the board in August 2008, with American businessman Ellis Short taking a stake in the club the following month and completing a full takeover the following year.
Mr Hays was also a well-known and respected figure in the business community in Sunderland having founded travel agent Hays Travel in 1980, and he and his wife Irene came to national prominence in October last year when they bought the Thomas Cook travel agency after it had gone into liquidation.
A statement from Hays travel released this afternoon said: "It is with the deepest sadness and regret that we have to announce that John Hays, the founder and managing director of Hays Travel died today, while doing the job he loved.
"John, who with his wife and co-owner Irene Hays bought the Thomas Cook retail estate a year ago, was at work in the company's Sunderland head office when he collapsed.
"John built Hays Travel into the UK's largest independent travel agent providing jobs and careers for thousands of young people over 40 years.
"Throughout this past difficult year he did everything in his power to save jobs and protect the travel industry.
Sunderland issued their own statement on social media, adding: "We are incredibly saddened to learn of the passing of former vice-chairman John Hays.
"John was a champion of the North East and the City of Sunderland. OUr thoughts are with his wife Irene, his family, and his friends at this time.
"Rest in peace, John."

Former Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn leads tributes to his boardroom 'teammate' John Hays
Niall Quinn has led the tributes to businessman and former Sunderland vice-chairman John Hays, who died today aged 71.
Mr Hays, founder of Hays Travel which grew to become the UK's largest independent travel agent, collapsed and died at his company headquarters in Sunderland city centre.

He was a member of the Drumaville consortium, led by former Sunderland striker Quinn, which bought the club from Sir Bob Murray in 2006.
Quinn became chairman of the club following the takeover, with Mr Hays acting as vice-chairman for two years before the club was bought by Ellis Short.
Quinn told ChronicleLive: "I was so shocked and saddened to hear the news today of John's death.
"Players have teammates in the dressing room, and when I became chairman John was my teammate in the boardroom.
"He was there alongside me every day, for no other reason than because he loved the club, and he was a huge guiding influence on a young chairman who thought he knew everything.
"John was the only Sunderland-born member of Drumaville, he influenced the way the other consortium members thought about the club, and he knew the background of the club going back decades.
"John and his wife Irene did so much for the city of Sunderland and they were lovely people to know.
"It's a colossal shock to hear of John's passing, and my thoughts are with Irene and their family."
Former Sunderland manager Peter Reid took to twitter to express his sadness, saying: "RIP John."
