The Sunderland owner, Stewart Donald, has agreed a deal to sell the club to a consortium led by minority shareholder Juan Sartori and Kyril Louis-Dreyfus - the 22-year-old son of former Marseille owner Robert - but looks set to retain 15% of his shares.
Donald has been actively trying to sell Sunderland since the start of the year and entered into an exclusivity period with an anonymous buyer a few weeks ago. The Guardian can reveal that Sartori - the Uruguayan businessman and politician who currently owns 20% of the club and sits on the board - is behind the move to bring in Louis-Dreyfus having made contact with him six months ago about the possibility of acquiring a majority stake.

It is understood that after months of ongoing due diligence and negotiations, the consortium made an offer two weeks ago to Donald which was accepted at the beginning of this week. Sources close to the deal expect it to be completed in the next fortnight.
Sunderland have declined to comment but cancelled a scheduled meeting with supporters’ groups on Thursday due to the “advancement and sensitivity” of takeover talks.
It is understood that Donald - who led the consortium that took over the club from American businessman Ellis Short in April 2018 - was keen to retain a portion of his shares, while former chief executive Charlie Methven will also keep hold of his acres worth 5%.
Along with twin brother Maurice, Louis-Dreyfus is one of three heirs to his father’s fortune following his death in 2009 and is estimated to have a trust fund worth more than £2bn that is held by his mother, Margarita. She remains a minority shareholder in Marseille having sold the majority of her shares in 2016.
Sunderland are sixth in League One after 10 games.

Who is Kyril Louis-Dreyfus?

Born in 1997, Louis-Dreyfus is the son of Margarita and the late Robert Louis-Dreyfus.
Robert’s family founded the Louis-Dreyfus group in 1851, with the company – based in Switzerland – a global leader in agriculture, food processing, international shipping and finance.
After Robert’s passing in 2009, Margarita took over the running of the company.

It remains unclear how much involvement, if any, Kyril has in the firm.

Do the Louis-Dreyfus family have history in sport?

Yes – the family previously owned French side Marseille before selling the club to former LA Dodgers owner Frank McCourt in August 2016.
Robert had purchased the club in 1996 and oversaw a successful period on the field at the Stade Velodrome – with the club twice making it to the UEFA Cup Final.

The family also held a minority share in Belgian side Standard Liege.
Kyril was a regular supporter of Marseille during the period in which his family owned the club, regularly attending games.

How much is Kyril Louis-Dreyfus worth?

It’s unclear how much Kyril himself is worth, but the vast wealth of his own family is well-publicised.
Forbes estimated his mother, Margarita, to be worth approximately $5.6billion dollars in August of this year – giving the family some real spending power.
Some reports have suggested that Kyril has a trust fund worth in excess of $2billion.
How much of that will trickle through to Sunderland remains to be seen.

What do we know about Kyril Louis-Dreyfus’ takeover bid?

The Guardian claim that he and Sartori are set to purchase a majority stake in the club – having kicked-off conversations six months ago.
They suggest terms have been agreed with Stewart Donald and a deal could be done within the next fortnight.

This is starting to move from daft rumour to probability.

We keep Donald and Charlie but with little say, good.
Sartori becomes a major player, good news.
A billionaire family

I can see PP going and a French manager coming in

I 'm pleased like you. I think I would be happier with a slightly cleaner slate with Donald gone but he's just hanging in there for profit once we get promoted I guess. Managerial situation  will be very interesting. If we're not to p 2 by Jan Parky will be gone. Hopefully the vision  can then be sold to a really good manager who doesn't mind dropping down to L1 temporarily.

It could be that they were unwilling to meet Donald's asking price. So Donald and Methven keep shares, which, if we gain promotion will gain value. once their share value reaches the level Donald and Methven wanted to recover their investment they will sell and move on.

They (new owners) can always dilute his holding by issuing more shares then enforce a buy out Twisted Evil

Hopefully the new owner will change the mentality and standards at the club to match what happened at Marseille...it's a big task but hopefully it's the turning point the club has needed for a while...

This is when Juan Sartori and Kyril Louis-Dreyfus are aiming to complete their Sunderland AFC takeover

Sunderland could have new majority shareholders by the beginning of December – according to reports in France.

The Black Cats are the subject of a bid from a consortium including Juan Sartori and Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, with the duo set to take a combined 80 per cent stake in the club if the deal is completed.
News of the bid emerged on Friday, along with suggestions that a deal could be completed within a fortnight.
And French newspaper L’Equipe have put a similar timeline on completion of the deal – with a report in the print edition of their publication suggesting that Sartori and Louis-Dreyfus are targeting early December as a completion date on the transaction.
The L’Equipe report also offers an insight into Sartori and Louis-Dreyfus’ early plans for the Black Cats.
They include a Sporting Director, with the report suggesting that interviews have already taken place for the role and that four candidates – based in England and Scandinavia – have been shortlisted.
High-profile firm Executives in Sport are understood to have been appointed to lead the recruitment process.
Meanwhile, the report also suggests that the duo may not only be purchasing Sunderland.

REVEALED: The clause that helped Juan Sartori’s takeover bid

It has previously been reported that Sartori was keen to purchase a club in his homeland of Uruguay, with his advisers holding discussions with a club earlier this year.
And L’Equipe suggest that Sartori – with new backing from Louis-Dreyfus – could now make that vision a reality with a bid for Uruguayan Primera Division side Club Atletico River Plate.
