Newcastle United U23s 0-4 Sunderland U23s
A brace from Benji Kimpioka helped Sunderland Under-23s pick up their first three points of the season with a comprehensive victory over Newcastle United Under-23s today.
Josh Hawkes put the Lads ahead on the stroke of half time in the Tyne-Wear derby, and Kimpioka doubled the lead on the hour mark in his first appearance of the season.
Cieran Dunne added a third 20 minutes from the end, before Kimpioka grabbed his second with a late penalty to complete the rout on Tyneside.
Elliott Dickman named Kimpioka in his starting XI after the forward put pen to paper on a new deal on Wearside last week.
While Under-18 centre-back Patrick Almond was also included from the off, with youngsters Josh Baggs, Harrison Bond, and Ellis Taylor all in the squad.
Sunderland started bright at Newcastle Academy, with Bobby Beaumont going close early on, but his effort was held by stopper Will Brown.
Anthony Patterson then did well to keep it honours even soon after, when he saved from Stan Flaherty’s free kick.
But Sunderland soon asserted their dominance on the game and took the lead when Hawkes met Ryan Wombwell’s cross and volleyed in from close-range to grab his first Black Cats goal.
On the hour mark, Kimpioka grabbed his first of the afternoon when he calmly lofted the ball over Brown and into the Newcastle net.
And Dunne added a third, smashing home the ball after a free-flowing team move down the left-hand side.
Kimpioka won and scored a late penalty, sending the ‘keeper the wrong way to cap off a fine afternoon in the Premier League 2 and ensure Sunderland took all three points.
Sunderland: Patterson, Wombwell, Almond, Beaumont, Dunne, Kimpioka, Wilding, Trialist, Hawkes, Wearne, Curry (Harris 83).
Subs not used: Baggs, Bond, Taylor
Newcastle: Brown, Barrett, Midgley, Francillette, Gamblin, Carlyon (Thomson 87), Longelo, Rounsfell (Toure 38), Young, Flaherty, Stephenson (Ndiweni 67).
Subs not used: Banda, Huntley
