The Black Cats were frustrated to draw 0-0 with Charlton at the Valley, despite playing the final 15 minutes with 10 men
Charlton manager Lee Bowyer has backed Sunderland to be among the promotion contenders come the end of the season.
The Black Cats were left frustrated by their goalless draw at The Valley, having seen a host of gilt-edged chances go begging, particularly in the first half.
However, Tom Flanagan's red card 15 minutes from time meant it was Bowyer's Addicks who were ultimately disappointed not to take the three points.
But the former Newcastle United midfielder felt the draw against what he feels is a strong Sunderland side, was a good point.
And he has seen an improvement from the Black Cats side which Charlton beat in the 2019 play-off final.
"I think a point against a strong Sunderland side – I think they’ll be up there at the end of the season," Bowyer said.
They’ve got some good players in that side, good experience and some good legs. They’re better now than when we played them before.
"The situation with us and the state our squad is in at the moment then I think it is a it a good point."
Phil Parkinson's Sunderland could - and should - have been out of sight by the break, but for some wayward finishing and an excellent performance from Charlton keeper Ben Amos.
And Bowyer was in no doubt who to thank for his side's point - even if he felt Connor Washington would have gone on to score if Flanagan hadn't fouled him to earn his dismissal.
“Ben Amos, I thanked him for that point today," Bowyer added.

Nothing to do with our strikers failing to hit an open barn door?

Is it that Sunderland are better or perhaps Charlton are a lot worse. Which would you expect the Charlton manager to say?
