Newcastle United Women 1-0 Sunderland AFC Ladies
The Black Cats fell to a narrow defeat in their second outing of pre-season, with a single goal enough to see hosts Newcastle come out on top.
The only goal of the game saw defender Jane Harland score via the post in the 39th minute, with the home side defending the lead until the final whistle.
Melanie Reay made two changes from the side that faced Norton on Sunday, with Louise Griffiths replacing Faye Mullen and Claudia Moan replacing Allison Cowling.
Sunderland started brightly, Maria Farrugia had a goalbound shot blocked two minutes in before Neve Herron forced the first save of the game with a shot from range.
Herron was in the action again soon after, Megan Beer played a great cross in from the right but the bounce just evaded the midfielder at the back post.
Sunderland continued to control possession, but a succession of free-kicks would see Newcastle find their feet.
Anna Soulsby headed just over from a Georgia Gibson free-kick after 33 minutes, and it would be a ball in from the former Sunderland midfielder that would lead to Newcastle’s breakthrough.
With six minutes of the first half remaining, Gibson dropped a free-kick into the Sunderland six-yard-box with Harland turning the ball in off the post in the ensuing scramble, the hosts taking the lead into the break.
Captain Keira Ramshaw went closest for Sunderland just three minutes after the restart, her driven effort was turned behind by a fingertip save from Dominyka Podziute.
Claudia Moan did well to keep the score at one, reacting quickly to come out and take the ball from the feet of Soulsby.
Farrugia would again have a shot blocked away, the Malta international shooting from the edge of the box after some good play from Ramshaw on the right as the hour mark approached.
Sunderland continued to try and work chances but Newcastle held firm while trying to build some counter attacks of their own, however Harland’s first half strike proved to be the settler.
A tough day for the Black Cats but more important minutes in the tank as they continue pre-season preparations.

So it's true - Newcastle do have a team that can beat us. It's only pre-season though!
