Leeds United have completed the signing of former Sunderland youngster Sam Greenwood, who joins after two years at Arsenal
Sunderland are set to miss out on potential financial bonuses after Sam Greenwood left Arsenal for Leeds United on Friday.
The 18-year-old forward has joined Leeds' under-23 squad, two years after leaving Sunderland to join the Gunners' youth ranks.
Greenwood joins the Whites after failing to make a first-team breakthrough at the Emirates, but managing to make five appearances in the Premier League 2 for Arsenal's second string last season despite his young age.
The forward is tipped to have a bright future and has numerous England youth team caps. Leeds are said to have paid £1.5m to land the winger, in a deal which could rise to £3m.
But Sunderland could potentially lose out from his move, with his initial Sunderland exit comprising numerous add-ons which could have eventually seen the price Sunderland got for the then-16-year-old to just over £1million. But a well-placed source told Sunderland Live that such a good fee for a youngster of his age and experience meant it's unlikely Sunderland will have any, or at least any significant, sell-on bonus attached to the deal.
Greenwood was one of the first academy players under the age of 17 to leave under the Stewart Donald era. It's been one area that has dogged the owner's time at the club, with numerous others following Greenwood out the door to bigger clubs with Sunderland relatively powerless to stop it. Players cannot be contracted until they turn 17.
n Greenwood's case, Sunderland were made aware the summer Donald arrived by the player's agent, that the 16-year-old had interest from elsewhere and would not be returning to club to train.
At that point, Sunderland were powerless to stop a move to Arsenal, but had a choice on whether to negotiate as good a deal as possible with the Gunners or let the matter go to an arbitration panel to decide the level of compensation.
Sunderland chose to negotiate and managed to get £500k upfront for Greenwood - a fee they'd have been highly unlikely to get in an arbitration process.
here was also add-on bonuses based on things such as making his Arsenal first-team debut, making his tenth Arsenal appearance and making his first senior England appearance. Each would have resulted in a little extra cash coming from Arsenal to the Black Cats.
But with Greenwood now moving on without ever making his Arsenal debut, Sunderland won't see any more than the £500k they received initially.
Sending a farewell message to Arsenal on Instagram, the Sunderland-born prospect wrote: "I want to say a big thank @arsenal and the supporters for the last 2 years of my career.
"Been an honour to play for the club while meeting some special people and making even better memories."
