Max Power believes tomorrow’s pre-season clash with Carlisle United will be a good opportunity to step preparations up a gear going into the new season.
The midfielder played 30 minutes on Saturday as the Black Cats opened their pre-season account with a win over Gateshead FC.
Sunderland return to the Stadium of Light tomorrow for the first time in over five months and speaking to safc.com, Power revealed it’s good to be home.
“It will be nice to get back at the Stadium of Light, especially for the new lads to get familiar with the surroundings,” he said.
“You ask any footballer, you can train as much as you like, but nothing can replicate a match situation.”
He continued: “Tomorrow, the plan is to play an hour, so it will be nice to get that longer stint in and I’ve always said pre-season is a good opportunity to create good habits.
“Carlisle will be a step up from Saturday’s game and that’s no disrespect to Gateshead.
“The start of the season is not too far away now, so it’s important that we start gearing up in match situations and really get that competitive edge back.
“We have a really good group and that togetherness in the dressing room goes a long way throughout a tough, long season."

Phil Parkinson has laid down his expectations for the rest of pre-season, beginning with the clash against Carlisle United tomorrow.
The Stadium of Light hosts its first game in over five months when the Cumbrians make the trip to Wearside, (kick-off 3pm).
Following victory over Gateshead on Saturday, Parkinson discussed the benefits of pre-season and provided an injury update on Elliot Embleton.
“We’re looking to improve the balance of our play to make us as threatening as possible,” he said.
“There have been some good elements to our play and some things we can get better at, but that’s what pre-season is all about.
“When we move the ball quickly, we’re a difficult team to handle.”
Elliot Embleton limped off during the first half at the Gateshead International Stadium, but Parkinson revealed it was just as a precaution.
“When he went down, I was thinking I hope that’s not his hamstring, but it’s not, it’s just a bit of tightness in his thigh,” he continued.
“Elliot has been excellent in pre-season and we certainly weren’t going to risk him.”

Fell asleep first half but woke up second.

The first 11 is taking shape and with one more game before cup game I'm sure Parky will know his starting 11.
