SUNDERLAND ON THE VERGE OF ANOTHER BARGAIN SIGNING AFTER O’BRIEN DEAL

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Danny Owen
Sunderland could complete the signing of another free-agent with Bailey Wright expected to join Aiden O’Brien at the Stadium of Light over the next few days, according to the Northern Echo.
Everyone on Wearside might have feared that they’d never escape aLeague One nightmare when the global health crisis reared it’s ugly head in March, robbing the Black Cats of a play-off challenge as well as much of their summer budget.
But, since the transfer window swung open earlier this month, Sunderland have set about reminding everyone that you don’t need money to pull off the odd inspired signing.

In former Millwall striker O’Brien, Phil Parkinson now has an adaptable and proven League One forward in his ranks.
The Republic of Ireland international scored 23 goals in two seasons at third-tier level between 2015 and 2017, firing Millwall to promotion along the way.

And, according to reports in the north east, Sunderland will follow up O’Brien with another free-agent signing.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] Wright’s loan spell at the Stadium of Light never really got going thanks to a combination of injuries and an ongoing global crisis.
But, whenever the Australian was available, he looked head and shoulders above the rest.
Wright, who was happy and settled on Wearside, only made five appearances for Sunderland – but the Black Cats won all but one of those, keeping four clean sheets to boot.
The former Preston defender has since been released by Bristol City and can be snapped up permanently for absolutely nothing.

No doubting Wright is a good un but a bit too much like Kirchoff for me regarding made of glass. Injured to easily.

This other bloke already signed is going to be a big hit with the fans methinks.

Sunderland AFC are delighted to announce the signing of Bailey Wright.
The Australian defender, who impressed throughout a loan spell at the Stadium of Light last season, returns to Wearside on a two-year deal.
Wright becomes Phil Parkinson’s second signing ahead of the 2020-21 campaign, moving to the North East on a permanent deal after his three-year stay at Bristol City ended last month.
Following his arrival, the Black Cats kept five clean sheets in six games with Wright at the heart of the defence before an ankle injury, and the coronavirus pandemic, brought a premature end to the campaign.
The 28-year-old has a wealth of experience under his belt, having made almost 300 appearances in English football, as well as earning 24 caps for Australia.
Wright gained promotion to the Sky Bet Championship during his eight-year stint with Preston North End, and following his move to Bristol City in 2017, he was named as the Robins’ club captain.
After returning to the Stadium of Light, Wright said: “It feels really good to get the deal done and I just can’t wait to get up to the North East and join the squad. Although I only worked with the manager for a short spell, I really enjoyed the structure and discipline of the team. He expects his players to give everything on the pitch and be good people, and we have that culture within the dressing room. We are heading in the right direction and I’m very confident we can achieve our ambitions next season.”
Manager Phil Parkinson added: “I’m delighted to have signed Bailey. He’s a very good player, but he’s also an excellent character and leader. He’s a really important signing for us and because of his quality, there was plenty of competition for his signature, so I’d like to credit the owner and Jim Rodwell for getting the deal over the line.”

Delighted, but now we need another big tough defender beside him, plus Willis,Flanners and young Taylor and then a proper right wing back so that 09 can get forward.

And we haven’t spent any of the war chest yet  Laughing

Sunderland keeping tabs on Kosovo international Arbenit Xhemajli, as they cast their net wide
Centre-back Arbenit Xhemajli is due to be a free agent this summer, and Sunderland have been scouting the Swiss-born 22-year-old
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Sunderland are keeping tabs on Kosovo international Arbenit Xhemajli ahead of a potential summer move for the centre-back.
The Black Cats are believed to casting their scouting net far and wide this summer as Phil Parkinson looks to strengthen his side ahead of the League One campaign. And 22-year-old Xhemajli, plying his trade in the Swiss Super League, has been identified as a potential target, Chronicle Live understands.

The young defender made his Kosovo international debut last October in a friendly win over Gibraltar.
Swiss-born, he came through the ranks at FC Zurich before joining Neuchatel Xamax FCS in 2017. He made his senior debut for them that season as they earned promotion to the Swiss Super League.

Last term they managed to stay in the top flight after winning the relegation play-off. With still one game left of the current campaign due to a temporary suspension because of COVID-19, Xamax are this time already relegated.
But with exciting prospect Xhemajli out of contract, it is expected he will move on this summer, with Sunderland keeping a close eye on developments. The Swiss season will be completed on Monday evening.

The 6ft3in defender is seen by Sunderland as a player with huge potential, and one whom could rise with them through the divisions should they achieve their goals.
Having released three centre-backs this season, they're in the market to strengthen their defensive options, although they have been boosted by both Tom Flanagan and Brandon Taylor extending their stays, while Bailey Wright joined permanently too. But those three only add to Jordan Willis for just four men competing for three starting spots, while Conor McLaughlin is seen as a versatile back-up option.
Despite Xamax's poor league placing this term, Xhemajli has impressed. They've conceded the second-highest amount of goals in the Swiss Super League, but were twice beaten 6-0 in games where he was absent. Scratch off this 12 goals against and they'd have only conceded two more than FC St. Gallen who will finish the season as runners-up.

If it's true we're looking at him I wonder who is responsible for this sensible change in recruitment policy where we look at young players who can either go through the divisions with us or be sold on for a profit?

Oh hang on...there's rumours about Danny Graham as well.

Anyway, this one looks like a good move.

Football Insider have claimed that Sunderland are in ‘advanced’ talks with former Everton defender Morgan Feeney.
With the 2020/21 season fast approaching, Black Cats manager Phil Parkinson is gradually improving his squad, having signed both Bailey Wright and Aiden O’Brien.
Links with a number of other players have also emerged as Parkinson looks to bounce back next year after a disappointing eighth-placed finish, with recent speculation about a potential move for the former Toffees defender.

Feeney, who has been training with the Black Cats this summer, departed Everton when his contract at Goodison Park expired in the summer. The 21-year-old defender spent time on loan with Tranmere during the 2019/20 season, whilst also making 12 appearances for Everton’s under-23 side in Premier League 2.

Available on a free transfer, the youngster would seemingly hand Parkinson some strength at centre-back, whilst his experience at international level for England’s under-17, under-18 and under-19 sides also makes him a potentially worthwhile signing.
Football Insider claim that a source close to them and Sunderland has confirmed that talks are entering a final stage for a deal to be completed.
This signing does seem to make sense for Sunderland. Feeney has experience at international level, albeit in youth categories, and he has been developing well at club level, handing him the potential of moving to the Stadium of Light with a desire to progress his career.
Strength in depth is just what Parkinson needs next season after several players left the club over the summer, but fans will be hoping this is not the only deal he gets done between now and the start of the League One campaign.

Sunderland AFC are delighted to confirm the signing of goalkeeper Remi Matthews.
The 26-year-old has put pen to paper on a one-year deal at the Stadium of Light following the expiration of his contract at Bolton Wanderers.
Matthews, who played under manager Phil Parkinson during his time with the Trotters, becomes the Black Cats’ fourth signing of the summer.
Prior to joining Bolton on a permanent basis in 2019, the stopper came through the ranks at Norwich City and enjoyed loan spells with Burton Albion, Doncaster Rovers, Hamilton Academical and Plymouth Argyle.
Matthews has made over 100 career appearances to date with six different clubs, and his efforts against the Lads on Boxing Day last year ensured he kept a clean sheet at the Stadium of Light.
Following his switch to Wearside, Matthews said: “Everybody knows how big this club is and I’ve worked with the manager and the backroom staff before, so nobody had to sell it to me – it was a no-brainer. I’m delighted to get the deal over the line and I’m excited to get going.”
Manager Phil Parkinson added: “This is a big signing for us because we have been trying to sign a goalkeeper and that process became very complicated due to the salary cap situation. Remi is a player with good experience but at 26, he’s at a good age with plenty of improvement in him as well.”

Transfers..news,gossip,,in..out Empty Feeney confirmed

Post  Mackemneil on 2020-08-21, 7:34 pm

Sunderland AFC are delighted to announce the signing of former Everton centre-back Morgan Feeney.
The 21-year-old joins Phil Parkinson’s side on a short-term deal after leaving the Toffees last month following a 13-year stay with the Merseyside club.
Feeney captained Everton Under-23s as they twice won the Premier League 2 in 2016-17 and 2018-19, and they completed a domestic double in the latter campaign by adding the Premier League Cup to their haul.
The defender has also represented England at Under-17, 18 and 19 level, while also spending time on loan with Tranmere Rovers last season.
After sealing a move to the Stadium of Light, Feeney said: “I’m made up to be here. It’s a massive club and when a team like Sunderland want you, you don’t think twice. After such a long time at Everton, I couldn’t really ask for much more than to come to a club like this and I can’t wait to get started.”
Manager Phil Parkinson added: “Morgan has been training with us for a few weeks and he’s done very well.  He’s a player with excellent pedigree having been in and around the England Under-19 set-up, and he will bring added competition to the defence.”

Interesting what Director Jones had to say today. He feels that many players without a club have been put off League 1 clubs by the salary cap initiative and are desperately hanging on for a chance in the championship. However, as the deadline approaches many will be desperate for any contract rather than none and some good deals may be had. But, Sunderland will need to hold back enough of their salary allocation to pay for a couple of last minute “gems”.

I hope my first thoughts on the current signings and potential signings are not good . I recall a few seasons ago we often took on board free signings and a number of loan players and whilst it is fair to say some proved to be good signings but we did have our share of poor performers. I hope Parkinson's judgement is better than past managers.

I'm not against signing players on a free or on loan although some of the players we have got this way particularly over last season never made much of an impact on the first team (De Brock, Semenyo, Tommy Smith, Sammut) begs the question why not try some of our youngsters instead? I know lots of our fans claim they're not good enough for the first team, but how come when we've sold off our youngsters the majority sign for clubs in a higher division than ourselves?

If we're not going to use our youngsters I suggest we splash a little cash on a couple of quality players who will make an improvement to the team rather than four or five frees or loans that may or may not?

Nobody can guarantee that these 'couple of quality players' will make any improvement to the team, though . . . . the same 'may or may not' scenario applies to any player that we sign.

We've just got to trust that Parky knows what he's doing, is signing the right players, and it works Wink

I personally think we should go with someone whom can grow as opposed to one needing to be cut adrift as we push for promotion at the top of the Championship the season after this one.

Do you not think we need both?

Parky looks like he will be giving the likes of Diamond his chance and hopefully Embleton will become a regular.
Cant remember but I'm sure some of the signings so far are early 20's but we also need some battle hardened experienced pros.

Kevin Phillips has backed Danny Graham to succeed at Sunderland second-time around after Phil Parkinson revealed the club’s interest in the striker.
The Stadium of Light legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, admitted that while the 35-year-old struggled during his first spell on Wearside he could prove to be a “clever signing” for the right price.
Black Cats boss Parkinson confirmed earlier this week that the club were considering a move for the Blackburn striker as he looks to bolster his attacking options ahead of next season.
raham scored four goals in 38 appearances last season in the Championship but he featured predominantly as a substitute.
During his first stint at the Stadium of Light he only scored one goal in 42 appearances.

When asked by Football Insider if the former Swansea striker would struggle again if signed, Phillips said: “It is always difficult. It is hard to judge.
“He has been there before and struggled so why would he come back and do well?

“I thought Will Grigg would be a fantastic signing but it has turned out to be a bit of a disaster for the kid.
“Danny Graham has scored some goals at Blackburn and you would like to think that dropping down a league, in a Sunderland side that will create chances, he should score because he knows where the back of the net is. If you can get him for the right kind of money then it could be a clever signing from Phil.

[i]“Let’s just hope that he has a better spell than the last time that he was there.  It helps that he is from the North East, he will be settled here.”
