We can confirm that Lee Cattermole has left the club with immediate effect.

Lee has been a great servant for SAFC and we wish to place on record our thanks for his dedication for the past 10 years and we wish him the very best in the future.

LEE CATTERMOLE STATEMENT
“Sunderland is a special club and this decision has not been easy, but I believe it is the right time to find a new challenge.
The football club, over my 10 years, has had some fantastic managers, staff and players and I have been lucky to be part of that.
I would like to say a big thank you to Jack Ross and his staff, and I wish him and the current squad all the best for the coming season. There are some exciting young players at the club and I will be looking forward to seeing them progress.
And finally, and most importantly, the fans. You are what makes the club special and your passion and commitment is something that has always inspired me throughout my career at Sunderland and will continue to inspire the team. Thank you.”

If his time and use done then it is so.  However, if his wages are being used just to bring another three ordinary players then the team spirit and leadership are being sadly diluted.  Last  of the players who have been at the top.

Sad to see him go but, maybe it was time and a complete fresh start needed.

The big question for me is does Ross stick with Honeyman for captain or do we start with a leader.

Honeyman is a squad player in my opinion. Not a leader and not a guaranteed first 11 player.

Will he give it to McGeuch, Power or even Maguire? Will we sign a big commanding physical CB who may get it?

We have to remember that the club is a business first and foremost and this is a commercial sense decision. We are a league one club and his wage represents most league one clubs total player wage bill.

looks like he is off to join Sheffield Wednesday - saves us some money but we lose one of the few quality players left in the squad

We will miss Cattermole more than many think.

Free transfer players as his replacement(s)? Will that make it more likely that we win promotion? But then we did not win promotion with him eother so who knows - if we get a few hungry players perhaps who have had injury issues (BUT ARE FULLY RECOVERED!) who are playing for their futures, maybe that will make the difference.

Well Catts can still do a good job for us in Div 1 no doubt, a player not blessed with pace and getting slower but the owners must balance what money he is on and what he can contribute. Probably the right decision to let him go but by no means an easy decision I would have thought. I would have thought there would not have been many teams looking at Catts purely because of the money he would have wanted so with Sheffield Wednesday wanting him probably made the owners mind up in the end. Wish him well and always gave his all for us.

Big earners left

Oviedo
Love
Watmore

all have 1 year left and could well see anyone of them go or all three.

I'd still like to keep Watmore. See what he looks like after a full pre-season and a few games under his belt. He's an extra attacking option that we could do with especially when reported targets are turning us down. Can't see that Watmore would have many other suitors at the moment anyway.

I like Oviedo a lot but he's a bit of a luxury for us. If we can get some money for him, then let's use it.

Love - I've seen nothing from him that makes me think we should keep him. Maybe I just haven't seen enough but what level is he really at?
