Sunderland Pallion Ward By-Election Empty Sunderland Pallion Ward By-Election

Post  Hieronymus on 2018-02-02, 3:02 pm

Trying to keep my mind busy and noticed a Sunderland by-election in the news. I am gobsmacked at the Sunderland Pallion result where a Lib Dem councillor was elected with an enormous change in the vote, from 4% of the vote last time out, to  53.5% of the vote yesterday.

Does anyone know if there were any specific local issues with the Labour candidate perhaps, or the council in general, to create this seemingly freak result? I can see turnout was low less than 32% and UKIP vote collapsed, but woudl that many UKIP voters vote Lib Dem just to get rid of Labour? Maybe so?

I have heard that people got confused because the Lib Dem candidate printed his literature in red and white so eveyone might have thought that he was actually the Labour candidate! But one would hope people could read the name and the party on the ballot paper before they make their X.

Does anyone have one of the Libdem leaflets they could send me? Or a photo of it front and back? If so PM me please or post photos on here!

Would be interestied in any ideas any of you (relatively) local people have why this might have happened. Thanks.

What the Liberal Democrat by-election victory means for Labour control in Sunderland
Labour will be smarting somewhat after losing a second by-election to the Liberal Democrats in one of its strongholds.

Thanks Syd Very Happy

I didn't realise it was Paul Watson's old seat. I know he was not that popular in the City as a whole, but he did keep getting elected! Have to watch what happens in May I guess to see if there is a trend.

This one caught me by surprise considering that it was in an area that was strong leave EU vote and the LibDems are the one pro remain party left.. I gon't think that the councillor who died was an issue as he was always popular in this area.
