The full-back, 20, has emerged as one of the brightest talents outside the top flight after bursting onto the scene with Leeds.

Now it has emerged he is a wanted man, with the Saints leading the chase to lure Byram to the Premier League.

The Saints have had a £4.5m bid rejected by Leeds owner Massimo Cellino, while the Black Cats have also seen a similar offer turned down.

But Cellino might have no choice but to cash-in on the England U20 international and sell him to the highest bidder.

Starsport can reveal Byram has told the Championship outfit he wants to leave, with the Black Cats his preferred choice.

Byram is desperate to have a shot at the big time and also knows he could see his wages quadruple with a move to the top flight.

The Saints are desperate for defensive re-enforcement's following the summer sales of Luke Shaw and Calum Chambers.

“Byram made his Leeds debut in 2012 as a teenager before going on to make 69 appearances and establish himself in the first team”

New boss Ronald Koeman is a huge fan of Byram's and is expected to make an improved bid in the hope of securing his services before the transfer deadline.

Byram made his Leeds debut in 2012 as a teenager before going on to make 69 appearances and establish himself in the first team.

He was a target of both Manchester City and Everton last year but chose to pledge his future to Leeds instead.

He signed a new deal in 2013 keeping him at Elland Road until 2016, but he now seems destined to leave.

Leeds, meanwhile, are considering pulling out of a deal to sign Juventus defender Frederik Sorensen.

Leeds director Graham Bean has spent the week holding talks with Sorensen's agent about a season-long loan move for the Denmark U21 international.

But it is understood Sorensen's representatives have made some financial demands Leeds have not agreed to and the transfer is poised to collapse.

SUNDERLAND have seen a bid turned down for Leeds full-back Sam Byram, according to reports today.

The Daily Star claims that both Sunderland and Southampton have seen offers of around £4million rejected for Byram, who has attracted intense interest from the Premier League over the last couple of seasons.
Leeds are keen to keep hold of Byram, 20, who still has another two years to run on his contract at Elland Road.
But Sunderland boss Gus Poyet is eager for further defensive recruits before the end of the transfer window, while Southampton are also desperate for new full-backs after selling Luke Shaw to Manchester United and Callum Chambers to Arsenal.
