Sunderland poised to offer Argentinian defender Santiago Vergini a permanent deal

SUNDERLAND boss Gus Poyet is set to make Santiago Vergini his first summer signing.

The Argentinian endured a nightmare start to his loan at the Stadium of Light being panned by pundits and fans alike.

But he's won over Poyet and the Mackem crowd by playing out of position at right back.

And now the Black Cats chief is ready to seal a deal with Estudiantes.

Poyet said: "Vergini pleases me a lot for different reasons. Firstly because I brought him here and I know him both as a player and as a person and know how important it was for him to succeed in England.

"He was playing out of position so it is even more impressive what he has done."

Vergini, 25, made his full Sunderland debut in the 4-1 defeat at Arsenal and after the 5-1 thrashing against Tottenham, Sky pundit Jamie Carragher claimed he was one of the worst centre halves he'd seen.

But he's undergone a stunning transformation since switching roles.

Gus Poyet wrote:“It will be nice to sit down with him and have a good chat about the future”

Poyet added: "When I needed a right back when Phil Bardsley was suspended, he was the only option.

"It was almost unfair on him because if he had played badly, it might have killed him.

"But he didn't and you have to give him enormous credit.

Good, quite happy with this. Thought he played really well after his difficult start and it is always good to have a defender who can play fullback as well as centre half.

He played well at right back.....I think now he knows what to expect in the premier he could also do a good job at centre back...time will tell

Reminds me of the horrific results we experienced when Charlie Hurley was first introduced, 18 goals  conceded in his first three games, 7-0 then 6-0 followed by 5-1 if I recall correctly. Supporters couldn't believe what was happening, but he turned things around and the rest is history.

Not suggesting this fella is in the same class as Charlie, but looks like he also suffered a baptism to forget and I've always felt that he was a bit more elegant on the ball than your typical central defender.

If he signs, let's hope his career follows a similar path.
