Alfredo Di Stefano: Real Madrid great suffers heart attack
Real Madrid great Alfredo Di Stefano is in intensive care after suffering a heart attack on Saturday.
Di Stefano, who turned 88 this week, was taken to the Gregorio Maranon hospital in Madrid after falling ill close to Real's Bernabeu stadium.
Di Stefano's honours
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Five European Cups (Real Madrid, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960)
One Intercontinental Cup (Real Madrid, 1960)
One America cup (River Plate, 1947)
Eight Spanish league titles (Real Madrid, 1954, 1955, 1957, 1958, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964)
One Spanish Cup (Real Madrid, 1962)
Two Argentine league titles titles (River Plate, 1945, 1947)
Four Colombian league titles (Millonarios Bogotá, 1949, 1951, 1952, 1953)
He has had several health problems in recent years and in 2005 was fitted with a pacemaker after heart surgery.
Di Stefano's achievements helped turn Real, the club he joined in 1953, into one of the world's leading sides.
Di Stefano, who played at international level for Colombia, Argentina and Spain, helped Madrid to five straight European Cup triumphs, scoring in each of the winning finals between 1956 and 1960.
The Argentina-born forward also won eight Spanish league titles at Real and was voted European player of the year in 1957 and 1959.
He left Real in 1964 having scored more than 300 goals across 11 seasons. He became honorary president of the club in 2000.
Former Real striker Gonzalo Higuain, whose goal sent Argentina into the World Cup semi-finals in Brazil on Saturday, said: "I was told when I got to the dressing room. It is not good news for football, for those who know him, for those who are close to him.
"Alfredo was always very close to me, I feel for him, I have great respect for him and I hope that he will recover. I only have words of gratitude towards him."
Real's official website   carried a picture of club president Florentino Perez visiting Di Stefano at the hospital on Saturday.

I was entranced in the early 1960s watching Real Madrid on the telly (European Cup Finals)

THE exciting team to watch...

A joy to watch RIP Alfredo.

Wasn't he the centre forward who played deep and fed the ball through for others to score, or something like that. Did Revie copy that style when he played at Sunderland and it was christened "The Revie Plan".

In his book, El Diego, Maradona shows a picture of him sitting chatting to a tubby old man.  Underneath, he wrote : "Two great honours here.  Two!  I receive the Balon D'Or from Alfredo di Stefano."  Maradona was as honoured by that as from his first Balon D'Or. Today, of course, everything has fallen to the incredible Maradona. But to me, di Stefano is still Argentina's second greatest ever player - and Mr. Messi has a way to go yet.

He did lie deep and feed other players, as Les has said.  But di Stefano had an extra trick in his bag than Revie.  He'd create a dangerous situation, wait, and then accelerate on the blind side of the defence (ratner .like Platt or Scholes when they played with Gascoigne) hence five goals in five successive European finals!  It got even easier in summer 1956 - after the Hungarian uprising, Ferenc Puskas joined him at Madrid, and that pairing was lethal.

R.I.P. Alfredo  A dark day indeed for football.
