On this day in 1980 Sunderland legend Jimmy Montgomery picked up a winners' medal after watching from Nottingham Forest’s bench as Brian Clough’s side won the European Cup for a second straight year, beating SV Hamburg in Madrid

And in doing so, he missed Sunderland's centennary game at Roker Park.  Not that he missed much - I was there, and what a god-awful charade it was.  Congratulations Jim, you earned it.
