Fab

FORMER Sunderland loanee Fabio Borini has been named in Liverpool’s squad for today’s friendly with Shamrock Rovers.

Borini’s spell on Wearside only ended on Sunday after their final match of the season against Swansea City.
He is part of an inexperienced squad for tonight’s game at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium, although senior players Daniel Agger, Joe Allen, Philippe Coutinho, Lucas Leiva and Martin Skrtel are also selected.

Billy - TRANSFER TALK: Sunderland Empty TRANSFER TALK: Sunderland linked with Aston Villa winger

SUNDERLAND have been linked with a move for out-of-contract Aston Villa winger Marc Albrighton.

The Black Cats are in the market for added pace and creativity out wide this summer, particularly after on-loan Liverpool forward Fabio Borini returned to Anfield.
Albrighton impressed for Villa during a sorry end to the season for Paul Lambert’s side and the 24-year-old could be available on a free transfer with his contract ending next month.
Reports have suggested Sunderland are interested in the former England Under-21 international, while both Everton and Leicester have also been mooted as keeping tabs on the Villa academy product.
Villa are still hopeful of keeping Albrighton though, with boss Lambert insisting last month that discussions had taken place with the player’s agent over a new contract.

Extract from Guardian: Liverpool clear out!!
Liverpool are also open to offers for José Reina, Fabio Borini, Oussama Assaidi and Suso, who have been on loan at Napoli, Sunderland, Stoke City and Almería respectively, plus the Uruguay defender Sebastián Coates. Daniel Agger's position is uncertain after a campaign in which he was frequently overlooked by the Liverpool manager, so too Martin Kelly's, while Victor Moses and Aly Cissokho will not be retained after their respective loan spells from Chelsea and Valencia.

He is still young but Lambert obviously didn't fancy him. I am surprised as he did really well a couple of seasons ago and I thought he was a potential star. I would like to see him here as I think Gus's methods would suit him. And he is free!

SUNDERLAND’S asking price is likely to determine whether Fiorentina make a permanent move for Modibo Diakite this summer, according to the defender’s agent.

Diakite has made nine Serie A starts for Fiorentina after joining the Italian side on loan in the January window, following an unconvincing first six months at Sunderland.
Sunderland will look to push through the 27-year-old’s exit this summer, with the centre-half not thought to be part of Gus Poyet’s plans after making just eight first-team appearances, following his Bosman capture 12 months ago.
With two years left to run on Diakite’s lucrative contract, Sunderland are keen to remove the Frenchman’s wages from the books, while there is also the possibility that he could be used as a make-weight in a permanent deal for on-loan Fiorentina left-back Marcos Alonso.
Spaniard Alonso impressed after arriving at the Stadium of Light in January and Poyet is keen to keep hold of the former Bolton man.
But ahead of the Italian season drawing to a close this weekend, Diakite’s agent, Ulisse Savani, says the former Lazio man’s chances of remaining at Fiorentina could come down to whether Sunderland are willing to let him leave for a minimal fee.
“In January, we could have chosen a different team, but we wanted Fiorentina,” Savini told the Italian press.
“Therefore, we waited until the last moment for the Viola to come calling.
“If it were down to Diakite, he would stay with the Viola with his eyes closed. He gets on very well with both the coach and his team-mates, and Florence is a city that he likes very much.
“It depends how highly Sunderland will value him. If they want to treat him as a possible starter he will come at a cost.
“But if they treat him like he is surplus to requirements he will command a much lower fee.”
Diakite’s departure – coupled with the possible exit of countryman Valentin Roberge – will mark an overhaul of Sunderland’s central defensive ranks this summer, with out-of-contract Carlos Cuellar already leaving.
Poyet wants to convert Argentina international Santiago Vergini’s loan into a permanent switch.
But the Uruguayan is likely to want one more centre-half, particularly with veterans John O’Shea and Wes Brown about to enter the final year of their Sunderland contracts.
Reports in Italy have linked Sunderland with a move for out-of-contract Wisla Krakow defender Gordan Bunoza, who has been a target for Palermo.
Meanwhile, the Black Cats have also been credited with an interest in Aston Villa winger Marc Albrighton, whose contract comes to an end next month.
Reports have suggested that Sunderland are interested in the former England Under-21 international, while both Everton and Leicester have also been mooted as keeping tabs on the Villa academy product.
Villa are still hopeful of keeping Albrighton though, with boss Paul Lambert insisting last month that discussions had taken place with the player’s agent over a new contract.

From the journal this morning:

Sunderland have run the rule over Exeter City’s promising teenager midfielder Matthew Grimes as they look to inject fresh legs into their experienced squad this summer.

The Black Cats are ready to refresh their engine room options and have bid farewell to Craig Gardner, who is being tracked by West Brom, Leicester and Derby County.

They are planning new talks with the rest of their out-of-contract options but they may also lose Jack Colback and Seb Larsson, who are wanted by a clutch of top-flight clubs if Sunderland fail to match their wage demands.

Behind the scenes, Sunderland are looking to recruit younger players capable of playing to Gustavo Poyet’s passing, possession-based philosophy and they have taken a close look at Grimes, the 18-year-old star of the Grecians’ season. Sunderland spotters were in attendance when Grimes played for Exeter at Hartlepool recently, along with a number of scouts from top flight and Championship clubs.

Grimes was handed the club’s player of the season award and is seen as a two-footed playmaker with the potential to improve. His boss Paul Tidsdale said: “He definitely has the ability to go up the leagues and play at a very good level.”

Sunderland are also looking at Aston Villa’s Marc Albrighton and Chelsea’s Josh McEachran, who has spent the season on loan at Wigan Athletic.

I'm inclined to think that Gus ' contacts at Chelsea and Spurs may be significant this summer...

Rodgers: Borini is staying with Liverpool

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
FUTURE ... Fabio Borini celebrates scoring Liverpool's

BRENDAN Rodgers has reiterated that Fabio Borini will have a part to play at Liverpool next season, despite fresh reports that the former Sunderland loanee could be allowed to leave Anfield.

BRENDAN Rodgers has reiterated that Fabio Borini will have a part to play at Liverpool next season, despite fresh reports that the former Sunderland loanee could be allowed to leave Anfield.
Borini was back in Liverpool colours in yesterday’s post-season friendly at Shamrock Rovers, with the Italian netting the second goal for the Merseysiders in a 4-0 win.
There has been renewed speculation today that Liverpool could sanction Borini’s sale this summer – a possibility which would put Sunderland on red alert, with Black Cats boss Gus Poyet keen to re-sign the 23-year-old after a hugely successful season-long loan at the Stadium of Light.
But Liverpool manager Rodgers has stressed that Borini will add “quality” to the club’s ranks next season, as they face the added demands of the Champions League.
“I thought he was excellent (yesterday)” said Rodgers, who spent £11m to sign Borini two years ago after previously working with the striker at Chelsea and Swansea.
“We had Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suárez last year. We didn’t have European football and Luis is so robust, he plays every minute of every game and he is a world-class striker.
“So I felt for Fabio’s development that he should go on loan. It was nothing to do with me not thinking that he is a quality player. I know him better than anyone.
“He needed to go out and get games to prove his worth and get experience. He’s done that. He has come back a year later and you can see his pace, power and ability to get goals.
“He is going to add to the quality that we already have.”
Borini was voted Sunderland’s Young Player of the Year after finishing joint top of the club’s scoring charts with 10 goals.
And the former Roma striker believes being involved in the relegation scrap with Sunderland has helped his development.
“I learned more about the game, to wait and adapt during the game,” he said.
“Before, I found that more difficult; I was starting the game one way and finishing the same.
“Now I can change my game and adapt to what is actually happening on the pitch, which is really important to mature.
“It has been great. It was a little bit hard at the beginning, because we were fighting all the time. We managed to get out of that situation and it was a great feeling.”

SEB LARSSON has been linked with a reunion with former Sunderland boss Steve Bruce at Hull City.

Larsson is currently in the midst of talks over a new deal at the Stadium of Light, with his current contract due to expire at the end of next month.
The Swedish international played a key part in Sunderland beating the drop and the Black Cats boss Gus Poyet wants to reward the 28-year-old by extending his three-year stay at the club.
But Larsson has plenty of admirers elsewhere, with Stoke City still interested in the former Birmingham man after seeing a January bid rejected by Sunderland.
Reports in Italy have linked Napoli with a Bosman move for Larsson, while Hull were today the latest club to be credited with an interest in the midfielder.
Ex-Black Cats manager Bruce brought Larsson to Sunderland on a free transfer in the summer of 2011 and is keen to bolster his squad, with Hull facing the added demands of Europa League football next season.
Bruce has already taken Sunderland old boys Ahmed Elmohamady and David Meyler with him to the KC Stadium, with the duo both featuring in Saturday’s FA Cup final defeat to Arsenal.

Just some food for thought...not that we did not realise it already

Eliaquim Mangala could snub Manchester City for Chelsea after the £35m-valued central defender stated he would prefer a move to the west London club because of its location in the capital.

Sunderland Linked With Senegalese Striker

Gus Poyet has been linked with a move for Moussa Sow of Fenerbahce.

In what seems to have become a transfer window tradition, Sunderland have been tenuously linked with Fenerbahce's Senegalese striker Moussa Sow.
According to reports in Turkey, Sow is looking to leave the Turkish giants with his sights set on the Premier League. The reports claims Sunderland, as well as Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur are all interested in the Senegal international but will face competition from Russian clubs CSKA Moscow and Locomotiv Moscow.
Tottenham are mentioned as the front runners for his signature, with an apparent bid of just over £11m on the table, an offer the board of Fenerbahce are currently mulling over.
The 28-year-old striker has had a successful time in Turkey after joining Fenerbahce from French club Lille for €10m in January 2012. After scoring 8 goals in 14 games in the remainder of the 2011-12 season, Sow went on to hit 19 in 54 games in all competitions during 2012-13 season and 16 in 33 last season.
Although Sow has a good goalscoring record and would seem a good fit for the Premier League, it's unlikely Sunderland would be genuinely interested at the prices quoted, particularly when they will have to finance quite a large overhaul with so many players leaving the club.
However, if you want to see what kind of player Sunderland have been linked with, you can check out the obligatory YouTube highlights video below;
