Hieronymus, I'd love to answer your post.  But not just now.  This is the saddest moment for me since the death of Nat Lofthouse in 2011.  The finale of an incredible era. Tomorrow maybe.  I'm so, so very sorry to hear this.

My abiding memories of Sir Tom was the disappointment on his face after losing the '64 cup final knowing it was his swansong. The other was the interview he gave for the tribute to Jackie Milburn where he especially mentioned the modesty of Jackie when he was with the England squad saying that Jackie underrated himself far too much.

Last saw him at Roker in a cup replay where we won 2-0 after a 3-3 draw at Deepdale. The last of the old greats.

Classic picture of a classic player, Syd.  Take another look - eyes still on ball, ball still under control.  Tom Finney in a nutshell.  That was at Stamford Bridge in 1955.
