Freddie Fletcher, the man credited with restoring pride to Newcastle United in the 1990s, has died.
The 71-year-old was diagnosed with asbestos-related cancer in January, and died on Monday night.

RIP: Former Newcastle chief Freddie Fletcher has died after a battle with cancer

Former Toon chairman, Sir John Hall, who worked with Freddie for 26 years was quoted in the local press.
He said: 'He was instrumental to the success of Newcastle United. It's sad to think we have lost a truly great friend. What he did behind the scenes was invaluable. My condolences go to his wife Margaret and family.'
Speaking to the Newcastle Evening Chronicle in June, Fletcher said: 'The reaction has been tremendous. Everyone has been so supportive and it’s very much appreciated by me and my family.

Club legend: Fletcher was part of the group who almost certainly saved Newcastle from administration in the 1990s
'Everyone has been fantastic, from the Newcastle fans to my close friends. I just want to thank them for their support.'

Fletcher was born in Greenock, Scotland, and originally made his name in politics before moving on to business with international companies Mars, Kraft and United Biscuits among those for whom he worked.

One of his first roles in football was as commercial director of Rangers in his homeland.
In 1991, he was involved in negotiations regarding a takeover of Newcastle United, a move which most likely saved the club from administration.
Fletcher is the man credited with bringing Kevin Keegan, and subsequent Premier League title challenges, to St James' Park.

Freddie Fletcher left the club four years before Bobby Robson did, it's Freddie Shepherd your thinking of.

Did they not bring him in from Rangers to do their marketing? Possibly was the one who came up with season tickets for life and the floating onto the stock exchange.
