Gotta be some changes to the line up after the mysterious selection at the weekend, anyone wanna take a stab and guess the team, harder than spot the ball competition this one.

Mannone in for Westwood...

I think Mannone will play and I am hoping to see Moberg-Karlsson and Whickam starting, but apart from these any 8 from 20 Laughing

Got to be optimistic mate,so it would be celustka for colback and gardner for rb,if colback is still injured.

That may well happen, but are we saying that we have no alternative solution to the l/b position? Of course not, we never seem to have.

Fancy Ji to get a run out.

I think Diakite will play. Looked a lot better in the 2nd half. Give him game time
Lets try without Sess, stick young Ba in

Mannone
Gards, Diakite Brown (if fit) or Oshea Celustkra
Jackie Cabral, Ba,  Karlsson
           Fletch (if fit) or Wickham
           Jozy

AJ, Seb etc on bench.

Should be strong enough to win

SAFC v MK Dons Empty Re: SAFC v MK Dons

Post  Guest on 2013-08-27, 9:12 am

VITO MANNONE will be handed his Sunderland debut tonight as Paolo Di Canio looks to preserve the competition between his two goalkeepers.

Summer signing Mannone has been forced to play second fiddle to Keiren Westwood for Sunderland’s opening two games of the season after head coach Di Canio opted to make the Republic of Ireland international his first-choice stopper.

But Di Canio believes the best way for Westwood to remain in form is to have Mannone breathing down his neck and he will give the £2million former Arsenal stopper a chance in tonight’s Capital One Cup second round visit of MK Dons.

Di Canio told the Echo: “This is one position where I can try to change things because there is competition there.

“At the moment, it is 60-40 because Westie has done very well, but it is not 100-0 like if you have an established number one and a kid.

“It is good to have competition. When one player is ahead 60-40, it means Westie knows he has to keep playing as he has to stay in the team.

“But Vito is a very good goalie and tonight he will have his chance.”

Mannone is unlikely to be among a raft of changes tonight though, with Di Canio insisting the Capital One Cup holds as much importance for him as the Premier League.

Midfielder Cabral, surprisingly dropped for last weekend’s trip to Southampton, could return, while there may also be Sunderland debuts for summer signings David Moberg Karlsson, El-Hadji Ba and Charis Mavrias.

But Di Canio has warned that the new boys won’t be introduced for the sake of it, as he attempts to steer Sunderland successfully into the third round.

“If we play with the new players to make the fans happy and we lose, people will ask why I did not play the strongest team!” he added.

“So I’m not here to make the fans happy in that way – I’m here to win, and that will make the fans happy.

“We can change the team a bit but we can’t make too many changes because I want to make sure that people know that we cannot underestimate this game.

“I don’t want to change six or seven players and at this stage of the season we shouldn’t have to. If players are tired now, there is a problem!

“I don’t know the number, it oculd be four.

“We know that Cabral last week played and this week didn’t play, but he’s one of a number who can play regular football.

“We will check the physical condition of the players and anyone who is not 100 per cent fit will not be risked.

“But I will pick a team to win this game because for me the cups are as important as the league.

JACK COLBACK is available for tonight’s visit of MK Dons after shaking off the dead leg which forced him off at Southampton last weekend.

Colback lasted just nine minutes of the second half at St Mary’s on Saturday after a first half collision with Saints summer signing Victor Wanyama.

But the left-back played a full part in training at the Academy of Light yesterday and is likely to remain in the starting XI for tonight’s Capital One Cup second round tie.

Paolo Di Canio told the Echo: “Jack is okay. He wanted to carry on at Southampton, but in the first half, he couldn’t move his leg.

“He tried, but then when you stop at half-time, it’s difficult to start again. After a few minutes, he said he couldn’t continue.

“It’s a typical problem, but maybe after one day with treatment, you can feel much better. You will be sore, but you can start to play again.

“Yesterday, he did everything with the team, so he’s okay.”

There is a possibility that Colback could be joined in Sunderland’s squad tonight by long-term injury victim Steven Fletcher.

Head coach Di Canio was coy on Fletcher’s chances yesterday, before claiming it was too soon for last season’s top scorer, who has only just resumed full training from the ankle injury that has kept him sidelined since March.

But it is understood that Fletcher’s progress has been so encouraging that Sunderland have tried to hold him back for fear of a relapse, and there is an outside chance he could be involved against the Dons.

One player who definitely won’t feature is Wes Brown, as he recovers from the knee injury sustained at the end of Sunderland’s pre-season.

But Brown has now been pain-free for more than a week and there is a possibility that he could join in full training before the weekend.

Di Canio said: “Wes is training harder and harder and he hasn’t had any reaction in his knee for the last eight days, since he started running.

“He’s started working with the ball too and there’s been no problem. He’s pushing and asking ‘when can I join the squad?’

“But we have to be sensible and intelligent. In another two or three days, he can maybe join in and stay with the squad.”

I'm going straight to the game from work without even having time for a pint..A quite unique experience for me..Shocked ..
I'm fully expecting a comfortable win regardless of the team he puts out..
Ha'way the lads..

Not sure if I will get there tonight, family stuff going on...nothing bad just a new baby grandson and expectations of where Grandad will be tonight.

Is it not strange how the cups which are realistically our only hope of silverware are not must get to and watch games?

As for the team, well we want to progress so there is a strong argument to put out our strongest team. On the other hand we do not want any injuries to any key personnel for league games, cos I get the feeling that every point is going to be hard fought.

So yes we will put the gooners keeper in, as for LB and RB, does Celustka need a rest, JoS could probably do with a mid week break. If Jack has had a knock resting him would be a good idea also. So perhaps a couple of the new guys should get a run out.

Centre midfield Ba and Cabral? Give the two young wingers a game, Karlsson and Mavrvis and let Ji and Wickham show they can play?

Also have al oad of subs that we can bring on if need be. The Outlaw needs a goal for instance.

Of course we SHOULD be able to pick any team strong enough to win but this is the cup and we all know from bitter experience that it doesn't always work that way.

if players want an excuse not to give 100%,a manager picking a weakened team ,including themselves,is the green light to stroll through the game.
