Up until 1956, there were no European club competitions, so clubs liked to play friendly games against foreign opposition.  Sunderland were a much more important club then than they are now, and from 1950, we welcomed Moscow Dynamo, Red Banner, Rapide SK, First Vienna, Borussia Dortmund, Racing Club de Paris, Staevnet, Maccabi Petah-Tiqva, and Hibernian.  But no Italian side ever visited us until Juve did on Monday 2nd December, 1957.

Your team : (Back row, left to right) Nicole, Corradi, Charles, Colombo, Ferrario, Garzena.  (Front row, left to right) Emoli, Boniperti, Stivanello, Sivori.

Unfortunately, Giampiero Boniperti couldn’t play that night as he was representing Italy in a World Cup qualifier in Belfast two days later.  But there were two massive stars who did play – the Welshman, John Charles, and Argentina’s inside-left, Enriquo Sivori.  A lot of people in England had seen Charles before he went to Juventus so, even though he was a very great player, he was the second attraction at Sunderland that night.  We all wanted to see the wonder-kid, Sivori.  And little Enriquo let nobody down.  He tore us to bits!  In Springtime, 1957, we were in trouble with the F.A. and many of our stars walked out on a manager who wasn’t worthy of the name.  Of the players we had left there was nothing even close to being good enough to handle Sivori.  He was back-heeling it over his head, and leaving us looking stupid.  Juventus won 2-0 that night, and deserved it.

The nice thing – I was just 14 years-old at the time, and collected autographs.  And I can tell you, Enriquo Sivori had an autograph, a smile and a kind word for everyone.  We couldn’t understand a word he said – I think he was still speaking Spanish at the time.  But, whatever he said, it was said with a smile, and those who saw him never forgot.  A great player, and a nice man - Enriquo Sivori.

If you are interested in John Charles you might like to look at :

It's been 1957 since I saw Juve fans here.  It's good to see you again.  Best wishes.

Thanks very much for your post. very very exciting.
I hope for a new match in future....

Unfortunately, or fortunately, I've never seen him play live Charles and Sivori (as features Tevez and Llorente could be similar this year), but my eyes have seen players like Vialli, Baggio, Zidane, Davids, Trezeguet, Del Piero, Nedved and ...... Di Canio (I don't know if you like that but I have his autographed West Ham shirt Smile

I remember reading that Savori was was an Argentinan who was a volatile character and reacted savagely to rough treatment and was given a rough ride by defenders hoping to needle him into reaction leading to a sending off. Many a time Charles would pick Savori up and literally put him over his shoulder and carry him away from trouble. He was not beyond offering to take Savori's place when one on one violence was offered.

Saw Charles in the early '50s at Newcastle when LUFC were first promoted and he took Newcastle on by himself and laid two goals on for a little inside forward called Wilf Meek who was about 5' 2'".

Can I ask you a question please? D'Ottavio left Torino nearly two weeks ago. The Italian press said he was coming to Sunderland. And he disappeared! We've heard nothing about him since then. Has the Italian press got anything about him in the last few days? Have you heard any news about him?

One other thing - you are going to love Carlos Tevez.

I liked Vialli, played some great football, and smoked ten thousand cigarettes per day. Believe his family have a museum of sorts. Back of my mind kind of stuff. Also believe his family are very wealthy. He didnt need football for a living, but was good enough in his own right,
