Formed 1974.

Was a part of county Durham until then, a good move or not?

I think it was a very good move, Sunderland is to big to be part of Durham, I always think of both being part of Wearside, forget the Tyne bit.

Tyne and Wear was disbanded as a metropolitan county a good few years ago, and people from Sunderland can use 'Sunderland, County Durham' as their mailing address if they so wish, as long as they use a postcode..I for one always do because I hated the Tyne and Wear experiment, as in my opinion it was solely designed to get Wearsider's and South Tynesider's taxes to fund the huge development that took place in Newcastle in the years after it was formed..

I suppose this part of our region got the Metro System.

However, many of us (whilst paying a lump of council tax towards it at the time) do not have local access to it.
