Post  Guest on 2013-05-23, 10:32 pm

Looking for players who may have played for Silksworth CW & Sunderland's "A" team in the 1954 Shipowners Cup Final. I realise this is a long shot, but if anybody knows of anyone who may have played back then, and are still alive I'd love to get in touch, ask them about their recollections of the match. Hoping to make a programme to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the game, which Silksworth won 3-0.

Cheers,

Sorry, can't help. I do remember the Shipowners Cup, and was at one final around that time. But it definitely wasn't this one because Charlie Fleming scored two bullets that night.

You shouldn't be fooled by that Sunderland 'A' team tag. We always played three or four internationals in the team (to boost the takings for the other local team, and, I suppose because the opposition would want to say 'I marked Charlie Fleming' etc.) We always made it an occasion for them.

When I was a nipper in the 40s I was a regular at the Chester-le-Street wearside ground where the "A" team played their games and can only recall a couple of players who made the first team. The goalie Tommy Fairley and a wing half call Albert Snelling (I think).

Believe it or not when the As played Newcastle Ns the whole area around the touchline was taken up with spectators. Shows the power of a local derby. The level of football in the Wearside League at time was tremendous and just about every Colliery Welfare had a good team.

I have the echo's match report here. A lot of the players for both sides only have their surnames listed, if anybody has first names for the lad's It would be very helpful.

Sunderland "A": Dodds, Jones, Chilton, Clough, Jimmy Nickalls, Bone, Kemp, Kirtley, Weddle, Shields, Mcseveney.

I realise this is a long shot, but any info would be great.

On the off chance, Silky: Surtees, Steinberg, Wilson, Wood, Jack Teare, Mcintyre, Robinson (l), Shaw, Palmer, Robinson, Hall.

Cheers again

Believe it or not, I think I have autographs from Bone and McSeveney!

Fantastic, thank you. Some rare autographs I'm sure haha!

Trying not to sound awful, but do you know if any of the lads are still alive? Just trying to see who we could potentially chase up.

I don't have any personal knowledge of them. But I'm sure the club could help. Several of these Sunderland lads made the first team. Certainly, Kirtley, Weddle and McSeveney made quite a few appearances. Bone and possibly Kemp made the odd first-team appearance too, though less, I think, than the other three. I should enquire at the club.

The wing half was Albert Snell who became a good friend of mine when we met at a photographic meeting. Bert did play a few games for the first team but injury finished his football career and he took up teaching and became Headmaster of a school somewhere between Sunderland and Gateshead. Bert lived on the seafront at Seaburn and sadly died several years ago.

Thanks Les. If I remember right he was doing OK in the first team and I think he preceded George Aitken. I did not remember his injury, so maybe if he had not sustained it Aitken may never have been needed.
