Di Canio ready to slap big-money 'Playboy model' Wickham in the face (and ban him from wearing small t-shirts)

Paolo Di Canio believes Connor Wickham needs a slap in the face to motivate him to reach his full potential.

The Italian says the Sunderland striker needs to stop acting like a 'Playboy model' and not complain if he has to train in the rain.

Wickham was yesterday included in Stuart Pearce's squad for the Under 21 European Championships this summer.

He returned to action as a substitute on Sunday having been out with a calf injury since he started Di Canio's first game in charge, but will be fully fit to represent his country in Israel.

'Maybe, with this guy, I have to slap his face a little bit,' Di Canio said.

'I'm talking about motivating him in a genuine way because he has so much potential. But sometimes he comes in (to training) and he seems to be looking around saying: “Where am I?” I want to say: “You are on the football pitch, with the grass.”

'He is an intelligent guy, but once he seemed to be complaining because it was wet. I told him that is typical for this area. Maybe if he doesn't go out in a small t-shirt when it is wet and cold, he won't be complaining. I have told him: “No small t-shirts.”'

Wickham, 20, has failed to make an impact since former Sunderland boss Steve Bruce signed him for £8.1million from Ipswich almost two years ago. It was a hefty price tag for an 18-year-old, but he was highly rated after making his debut in the Championship aged only 16 and scoring the winner for England in the European Under-17 Championship final.

But Di Canio has urged him to concentrate on football if he wants to live up to the reputation he brought to the club.

The 44-year-old added: 'I don't want him to be missing a couple of games because he is a Playboy model. We are footballers, that is our job.'

Dont you just love Di Canio, one onevhand I'm uncomfortable about public criticism of players but on the other I lovenhis honesty and openness.

The playboy not liking getting wet just fits the image.

If it's good enough for this guy, Connor ... You might have an £8m price tag, mate, but believe me, you are one million miles short of a Tom Finney !

I'm not so sure it's that simple, Commo. People like Shackleton fought to be rid of the maximum wage back in the 1950s (and Sunderland were nearly kicked out of the Football League for doing what they thought was right by their players!).

They had a good argument. These lads pull in the same crowds as pop stars and it was wrong to pay them £20 a week. But once you start paying them pop stars money, they automatically start living like pop stars.

Are they soft - yes, but that's not necessarily a straightforward criticism. Today, their tonsorial elegance and their manicure is important to them whereas Tom Finney was a plumber. Their expectancy is naturally different.

Nonetheless, if players like Connor Wickham want to make anything like the mark Sir Tom did, they'll just have to get their butts out there.

Wickham needs to remember the hours of training that lead him to be in a position to get a professional contract in the first place. I know of 12 year old's who are training harder now than he does!

Dave : I thought I'd made a decent post with that pic of Sir Tom Finney. I love it, y'know - the man still has his eyes on tha ball in spite of the muck. But I bow my head to you, mate.

"You feel anything that can't run away, you dirty old bugger."

That was the star comment on this whole thread - by a mile. I bloody loved it. cheers
