Bit of a Nomad really, he's here, he's there, he's every flippin where.

A lad of no fixed position, Jack of all trades, master of none.

Still he made Garth Crooks team of the week, along with Danny Rose.

DEFENDER - JACK COLBACK (Sunderland)

There have been a number of notable Sunderland performances under the new manager Paolo Di Canio, and Jack Colback put in one of them. Colback played at right-back, matched Leighton Baines in every department and never allowed the England full-back or Steven Pienaar to get behind him. An impressive display against a formidable pair.

Did you know? Made seven interceptions, no player made more this weekend.

................................................................

DEFENDER - DANNY ROSE (Sunderland)

Speaking on Saturday's Match of the Day, Alan Hansen said that Danny Rose "cut Seamus Coleman in half" before hitting a superb effort that produced an excellent save from Tim Howard. Both Sunderland full-backs were excellent against Everton, although Rose was lucky to get away with a couple of incidents that could have landed him and his team in difficulty. What is clearly evident however is the lift Di Canio has given the players at Sunderland.

Did you know? Sunderland have won 32% of the games Rose has started this season, compared to 17% when he has not started.

I've been debating with myself about bringing up the subject of patience on the Not606 board regarding Jack. He has had some unjustified slatings about his performance and I have been yelling that he is just a kid that is learning his craft and had he been a foreigner it would have been his "settling in" period.

The lad is turning into a worthy footballer and has never let anybody down, his emergence as a a better player is not down solely tp PDC but the movement of the players around him giving him a better defined role. Buy who you like in but this local lad who is team through and through, quietly confident, and has ability should be groomed as a future captain.

Problem being, just where does he play?

He needs to be settled into one position, where that is, i've no idea.

Well, we've had Bardsley at left back, Jack at right back which indicates to me that any interchangeable player is worth his weight. If he does the job he can be used where needed. If he was to become specialised though, maybe we won't pay through the nose for Rose.

I'm trying to think of other utility player, players that can cover at least three positions, help me out here.

Edit, thought of one..O'Shea.

I am and always have been a Colback fan, long before Di Canio Jack was one player who always gave his all, he will love the Di Canio style.

He may suffer because of his versitility, there again he may thrive through it and be our Mr Versatility.

All good teams need flair players, eye catches but very good teams also need 110% players who simply work hard, do their job and never let you down.

Far to often we look at our players and complain that they are not champions league standard, there is a reason for that.

Jack Colback looked like a different player against Everton.

A few weeks back he was struggling to accurately pass the ball, and losing it in dangerous areas.

On Saturday he displayed a level of class that I've not seen in him to date.

Is that because he has finally been played in the correct position, or that Di Canio has boosted his confidence?

He was well supported. There was always a player near to him to lay it off quickly.
.. and that is GOOD !

Very Happy

I have always liked Jack. He is an intelligent footballer, always works hard for the team, has some skill and seems to be a nice lad who never causes any problems on or off the field. I think maybe along with everyone else Jack had been suffering a lack of confidence, but PDC has worked his magic and I think he showed what a good player he is against Everton.

Other versatile players that I can think of are Phil Neville, who hasn't had a bad club and England career, and young Phil Jones who seems able to play full back, centre half and midfield equally well. I am sure there are lots more but they tend to be unsung players who get on with the graft and let the flair members of the team do their stuff. Every team will have players like this and I hope Jack thrives under the new management regime and has a great future.

Jack had an outstanding game on Saturday but he is naturally left footed, but unlike some of the other left footers in the squad, e.g.Jamesie and Adam Johnson he does not just use his right foot to stand on. Gardner who does score the odd goal not just pens is a decent right footed RB.

I would have Colback and Alfie as defensive CMs, but they have to make runs forward get into the box and score the occasional goal, as it is goals that win matches. Perhaps a hunger for goals is something that PDC can add to these two players games.
