Italy has extended its emergency coronavirus measures, which include travel restrictions and a ban on public gatherings, to the entire country.

On Monday, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte ordered people to stay home and seek permission for essential travel.

He said the measures were designed to protect the most vulnerable. "There is no more time," he said in a TV address.

Italy's coronavirus death toll jumped from 366 to 463 on Monday. It is the worst-hit country after China.

The number of confirmed infection also increased by 24% from Sunday, official figures showed.

Cases of the virus have been confirmed in all 20 Italian regions.

What did Mr Conte say?
Mr Conte said the best thing was for people to stay at home. "We're having an important growth in infection... and of deaths," he said in an evening address.

"The whole of Italy will become a protected zone," he added.

"We all must give something up for the good of Italy. We have to do it now.

"This is why I decided to adopt even more strong and severe measures to contain the advance... and protect the health of all citizens."

'Italy lockdown cut me off from my husband'
In an earlier interview with La Repubblica newspaper, Mr Conte said of the outbreak: "I have been thinking about the old speeches of [Winston] Churchill - it is our darkest hour, but we will make it".

What are the restrictions?
Mr Conte described the measures as "I stay home" - with people forbidden to gather in public. "No more nightlife; we can't allow this anymore since they are occasions for contagion," he said.

All sporting events - including football matches - are suspended nationwide. Schools and universities will remain closed until 3 April.

Coronavirus symptoms 'take five days to show'
The government said only those with a valid work or family reason that cannot be postponed will be allowed to travel.

Passengers departing on flights will have to justify themselves, as will all those who arrive by plane.

There are controls at train stations to check the temperatures of passengers. Cruise ships are also forbidden to dock at various ports.

How have people reacted?
Earlier on Monday, seven inmates died amid riots at prisons across the country after authorities suspended all visits as part of attempts to control the spread of the disease.

The trouble began in the northern city of Modena at the Sant'Anna prison.

It is thought that at least two of the dead lost their lives to drug overdoses after they raided a prison hospital for the heroin substitute methadone.

At San Vittore prison in Milan, detainees set fire to a cell block, then climbed onto the roof through windows and started waving banners, officials said.

At a prison in the southern city of Foggia, dozens of inmates broke out of the building during protests. Many were quickly recaptured, Italy's Ansa news agency reported. Nine are still missing.

There were also riots at other prisons in northern Italy and at facilities in Naples and Rome.

How about the rest of the world?
The number of infections worldwide is now more than 111,000, with about 3,890 deaths.

Everyone arriving in Israel will be required to self-quarantine for 14 days, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced.

Iran has reported 43 new deaths related to the disease in the past 24 hours. At least 237 people have died and 7,161 have been infected across the country since mid-February, although the real figures are believed to be far higher.

China, which has recorded the highest number of fatalities, reported just 40 new cases of Covid-19, the lowest since 20 January.

Although this indicates that the spread there is slowing, senior officials warned against reducing vigilance.

In other developments:

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the threat of a pandemic is "very real"
Canada has confirmed the first death related to the virus - an elderly male patient in a care home in Vancouver, British Columbia
In France, Culture Minister Franck Riester has become the first member of the government to be infected with the virus. His team said he had spent several days of the past week in parliament, where a number of other cases have been confirmed
In the US, the number of confirmed cases now exceeds 500
A cruise ship carrying thousands of people who were stranded for days due to a coronavirus outbreak has docked at the port of Oakland, near San Francisco
Shares around the world had their worst day since the financial crisis amid concerns about the economic cost of the outbreak

And as yet no one arriving from Italy into the UK at any airport is being screened for the virus - it is a sad state of affairs when even Italy are better organised than us.

H....Why am I not surprised at whats happened in Italy. My information might be three weeks old but oh how could I embarrass officialdom & the personal hygiene of certain ethnic groups or blasé attitudes of most but then I'd be labeled as racist or some similar title!

Ps. Avoid close contact with people, carry a hand sanitiser in your pocket at ALL times & NEVER put your hands near your mouth. The average person does so 24 times per hour. Oh and wash or sanitize before ever eating. You never know, you might just not get the Flu again  Smile

I love the way the armchair experts knock the real expert, the chief medical officer.

IMO the government are doing a good job and credit where its due. The reason we are not testing everyone or indeed anyone coming into the country was explained by Professor Chris Whitty, the Chief Medical Officer.

If the government and Boris where not taking his advice they would be slaughtered.

We should be testing everyone every 2 days imo. Let's get the true figures, so we've got some real data to go on.

What we're doing at the moment, is just letting it rip through the UK, and deal with it when we need to.

Are people forgetting that this virus incubates in your body for 5 days before anyone shows any symptoms? Testing regularly would enable people to self isolate and prepare properly. Waiting for people to drop on the floor before reacting is asking for trouble, that person will have infected 20-30 people by that time.

It's a ridiculous strategy to adopt. The government are putting people's lives at risk for the sake of saving money on testing kits. What's the point of trying to rescue an economy, when the people who pay their precious taxes to run it are at risk of dying?

Could not agree more Steve -its what they have done in Hong Kong and Singapore among others. But we all know why the UK is not testing, it's because there aren't enough test kits, or medical staff to administer the tests or enough nurses/doctors to care for people who test positive. This is what 10 years of Austerity and 40 years of neo-liberalism have come to; a decadent Prime Minister, a paralysed, incompetent Government and a pandemic strategy that basically says if you are old, vulnerable, sick or not 'economicallly active' this government does not give a toss about you Evil or Very Mad

Just the truth, unashamedly politically motivated and proud of it, but not to cause unrest, just to provide facts.

The impact of austerity is that the UK has no contingency or resilience in the NHS; not nearly enough hospital beds, certainly not enough intensive care beds, or respirators, and definitely not enough testing kits or staff. Also without adequate social care and council services we are relying on disorganised and inefficient volunteer community support to ensure elderly and vulnerable people being asked to stay home for 12 weeks or more can survive.

So come on then - who was HAPPY with the strategy aimed at 'delaying' the peak of coronavirus? A strategy trying to keep the economy going at the expense of people being infected - when all the experts and all the scientific evidence was basically saying the opposite?

Anyway the government has now been forced to changed tack because the algorithms showed hundreds of thousands would die and that might affect political popularity, leading to Boris the buffoon giving the most incompetent press conference it has ever been my misfortune to watch last night.

Thousands of our loved ones, friends and neighbours will die in the weeks and months to come because they got this horribly wrong, not just in the last few weeks but over the last 10 years - and yes, in my view, all of it 'politically motivated bollocks' Evil or Very Mad

I have never been a Boris fan and never voted Tory however Boris has my total respect for his handling of the present crisis.
He is dealing with a fast moving situation and one where none of us know the right answers, its all about balancing risk,
IMO he will be dammed if he does and dammed if he does not and it saddens me to see the small minority who are playing politics, now is not the time IMO.
It's time to put political differences to one side, question yes, suggest yes but support and work together for everyone's good.

Well said, Sydney . . . . it's totally unacceptable and unbelievable that some still choose to point score under the circumstances [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The government has responsibly followed expert advice, and to suggest that "all the experts and all the scientific evidence was basically saying the opposite" of what they're doing, or that they've "been forced to changed tack" is obvious 'point scoring' to the detriment of the whole country, who should be unified to fight against this massive threat to our existence Wink

It's obvious that some will say whatever is necessary to undermine the security and health of the whole of the U.K. solely because their party isn't in power . . . . sorry, but I can't understand that mentality [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

My apologies. Sorry, I didn't realise I was not allowed to have an opinion. I must have mistakenly thought this was a discussion forum.

And as for putting political differneces to one side - I am currently working with our Tory councillor to make sure every person in my villlage is looked after if they need to self- isolate. I have delivered cards to all my elderly neighbours to let them know I am around if they need help. I am currently working with the Tory parish council and development trust to try to save small businesses that employ most people in the village. What are all you holier than thou types doing?

A very impressive PMQ's today from all party leaders but again IMO a very impressive tone from Boris.
Gone is the bluster of BREXIT and a far better grown up tone is welcome.

I'm honestly not sure how you are upset over my post, all I am giving is an opinion and not complaining about your opinion or indeed anyone elses opinion.
You are spot on about this being a discussion forum and that means all opinions are welcome, I stick by mine but had and have no wish to upset or annoy anyone.
