Steve Evans believes Sunderland will pose a sterner test to his Gillingham side than promotion rivals Portsmouth or Ipswich Town.

By Mark Donnelly
Friday, 6th December 2019, 8:40 aM

The Black Cats currently sit 11th in the third tier - below both Pompey and the Tractor Boys - but Evans insists that Phil Parkinson’s men will prove to be the hardest nut to crack as the Gills prepare to enter a crucial run of fixtures.
Sunderland travel to Priestfield on Saturday having lost in Kent only weeks ago in an FA Cup first round replay, with boss Parkinson looking to bounce back from a run of form which has seen him win just two of his first 11 games in charge at the Stadium of Light.

But having now welcomed back a number of key players - including attacking duo Marc McNulty and Charlie Wyke - after a ten-day break, Evans is expecting the Black Cats to be a ‘different proposition’ this time around.

Indeed, he feels Parkinson’s men will be the hardest game they will face over a festive period that also includes clashes with Ipswich and Portsmouth.

“They have had 10 days to freshen up, 10 days to get players back from injury and they will be a different proposition I guess here than what they were in the FA Cup,” said Evans, speaking to Kent Online.
“I know Phil well, he is a very gifted manager. Those last two results weren’t great and they needed a break but they knew this was coming.
“They have had the chance to get some players back in that weren’t available against us and it will be another battle.
“I think it will be the hardest of the three games, for sure.”

And while the Black Cats have struggled for form in recent weeks, Evans remains convinced that they will be in promotion contention come the end of the campaign.
“Sunderland have very talented footballers,” he added.
“They will be in the top six at the end of the season, no doubt. It will be a tough challenge."

Not sure I can believe that a manager who has recent experience of us thinks so highly of us.

Hands up who thinks Grigg will start?

I do. Either that or he'll be brought on as an impact sub when Wyke fails to deliver. McNulty and Kimioka will be ignored.

I hope I'm wrong.

getting roped into putting the Xmas tree up - seems preferable to watching this game  Razz

fingers crossed for a positive result - a loss or a draw just isn't going to cut it

Half is nearly up - 0 corners, 2 shots - against Gillingham who have managed 6 shots on goal...

we ended up with 1 corner (to their 10) and a total of 7 shots (to their 12) - when you are a former premiership club (within recent memory) it just feels crazy to be getting beaten on a regular basis by the minnows of professional football (no offense intended as those other teams are winning!) - prior to this game Gillingham were in the bottom half of the table so its not like we are even playing championship level clubs here

i don't think that the team will be relegated but there is not a chance that they get promoted (and if they do then they will be the laughing stock of the championship unless almost the entire team is replaced)

Missed the game but this sounds so depressing - not sure where we go from here. Unless soemthing changes seriously, and quickly, we are doomed to League One again next year. AND with no more parachute payments to pay the wages and dwinding crowds - it's going to be a slog to get out of it. I fear for the future I really do unless we get another Niall Quinn (Sir KP?) arriving on his magic carpet to provide a boost and some positivity again.

In terms of parachute payments and large wages - who on the team is doing anything to suggest that they should be paid more than the L1 average wage? our position in the league would suggest we are the very definition of an average league one side (and the players should be compensated accordingly IMO)
