A Dutch man has died after being kicked and punched by a group of teenage football players for whom he acted as linesman in a Sunday league match.

Richard Nieuwenhuizen collapsed and was taken to hospital hours after he was beaten by three players from Amsterdam club Nieuw Sloten. He died on Monday.

He had been officiating for Buitenboys club, in the town of Almere, and one of his own sons had been playing.

Three teenagers, aged between 15 and 16, have reportedly been arrested.

Buitenboys club chairman Marcel Oost said Mr Nieuwenhuizen, 41, officiated as linesman for the team every week. "He enjoyed doing it. He was a real football man; he was always here," he told national broadcaster NOS.

News of his death sparked shock in sporting circles around the Netherlands.

The Dutch minister for sports, Edith Schippers, said: "It is absolutely terrible that something like this can happen on a Dutch sports field".

Anton Binnenmars ,of the Royal Netherlands Football Association, described it as "too crazy for words that somebody involved in a sporting hobby becomes a victim of this kind of aggression".

Nieuw Sloten said it was "deeply shocked" by what had happened, and intended to ban for life the players found to be responsible, had pulled their team from the league and temporarily suspended all its operations as a club.

"Violence should not be on the football fields," it said.

Helped a mate out who was reffing a cup tie in Cyprus between teams who were sworn enemies. He said he could not trust any club officials to be honest enough to run a line for him. Called as I saw it and gave offsides based on staying in line with the last defender and using the penalty area line as a guide.

The crowd and players attacking my end of the ground were going alsolutely mad about some decisions and he had a hard time controlling the game but we quietly had a meeting at half time and strolled around the penalty area by his calculations one line measured about 18yds but the other was only about 16! Any border line offsides were judged on that line so he kept me at that end of the field just to be equally unfair to both teams.

Was not a nice experience but what the hell we did an English compromise.

Funnily enough Syd, that was what I picked up on, never mind a ban, they should be doing "life" in the slammer!

I'm sure it was a well intentioned quote, a well they will never play for us again but some things are taken as read, killing a linesman I would have thought would be one of those occasions.

Three to be charged over Dutch football linesman death

All amateur football matches in the Netherlands have been cancelled this weekend

Prosecutors in the Netherlands say they will charge three players in connection with the death of a linesman in a Sunday league football match.
The two 15-year-olds and a 16-year-old will face broad charges in connection with the death of Richard Nieuwenhuizen.

The three remain in custody ahead of their court appearance on Thursday.

The prosecutor's office said the investigation was continuing and witnesses were still being questioned.

Mr Nieuwenhuizen had been running the line for his son's team, Buitenboys. After the match he was attacked by members of the opposition, the Amsterdam club Nieuw Sloten.

He collapsed hours after the assault, fell into a coma and died in hospital on Monday.

The Dutch Football Association has cancelled all amateur matches for the coming weekend as a mark of respect for Mr Nieuwenhuizen. A minute's silence will be observed at professional games.

The assault has been widely condemned in the Netherlands. Sports Minister Edith Schippers, the Dutch FA and the coach of the country's most famous club, Ajax, have expressed disbelief and outrage.

And Sepp Blatter, the president of the world governing body, Fifa, has written to the president of the Dutch FA to express his "sadness and distress".

"Football is a mirror of society and sadly, the same ills that afflict society - in this case violence - also manifest themselves in our game, " Mr Blatter added.

Nieuw Sloten said it intended to ban for life the players found to be responsible, that it had pulled their team from the league and temporarily suspended all its operations as a club
