Not really surprising they were a different class when over the last decade they have spent 10 times as much on transfer fees as Watford (and almost twice as much as the next highest spending team Man Utd)

To get the best players is one thing, to improve them and build them into a team is something very different.

It is an awful lot easier to build a team when you can buy the best to begin with though - look at the winners of the main leagues in Europe this year

- France - PSG - biggest spenders over last 5 years
- Italy - Juventus - biggest spenders over last 5 years
- England - Man City - biggest spenders over last 5 years
- Spain - Barcelona - biggest spenders over last 5 years

It's almost as though success and expenditure go hand in hand Smile

Imagine if they had Klopp, thay'd have had another two Cups at the end of the season!
On that note we could learn a lot from the Dortmund model. Who knows we might even become a stable EPL club in less than the seven wonderful years he had there if Ross is the man.

Without doubt having the cash to buy the best is a massive advantage and one most clubs have no chance of competing with.
It would be interesting to see Pep becoming Sunderland manage for a few seasons and see if he can turn our squad to world beaters, of course he could not.

But its chalk and cheese and managing the best, motivating them and improving them is an art of its own.

still Dortmund were another big spending club (£365m over the last 5 years) - theirs was just offset by some very big sales (e.g. Dembélé to Barcelona for £112m!)

its so very very difficult to have any real success in a big league without spending a ton of money as that's what the competition is doing Sad

there is some skill there but (IMO) it's mostly down to the players - give Pep Wolve's squad and resources and give Santo Man City's squad and resources and I would bet every penny I have which team would be ahead of the other come the end of the season and which manager would be getting all the plaudits

I must have been mistaken by what I thought I'd read again recently about Klopp joining Liverpool. Are you saying the Dortmund model developed under Klopp is and was a failure?

Good to hear from you Sid, I agree about the Watford fans, their singing and flag waving, even at 5 and 6-0 down was class.

Vincent Kompany has also been a class act. You'll miss him, hope he does well with Anderlecht  like
