Sunderland boss provides full injury update on key trio Lynden Gooch, Aiden McGeady and Lee Cattermole ahead of Burton Albion clash

RICHARD MENNEAR Email Published: 18:01 Saturday 06 April 2019

Jack Ross hopes Aiden McGeady and Lee Cattermole will be pushing for a return to the Sunderland squad for Tuesday’s home game against Burton Albion. The pair both missed the dramatic 2-1 win over Rochdale at Spotland with foot injuries but Ross remains hopeful they will return to training on Monday at the Academy of Light.

The game will almost certainly come too soon for Lynden Gooch however, the forward was taken off just 31 minutes into the win at Spotland with a hamstring injury. It was a recurrence of an ongoing hamstring injury for the forward.

On Gooch, Ross said: “It is his hamstring again, it has obviously been an ongoing issue for us all season. “In fairness to Lynden he has played a lot of games, it is always a wee niggle for him. “Too early to say right now. “Tuesday game comes round quickly, it may stretch us again. “We are hopeful we will have a couple back.”

Sunderland missed Aiden McGeady’s endeavour and creativity first half and Ross has revealed the winger was desperate to be involved. Ross added: “Aiden was absolutely desperate to play, and he was desperate to travel and be on the bench. “We tried again yesterday but he was still feeling it.

“I have not spoken to him today but hopeful when we come back Monday he has a good chance for Tuesday.” And on Cattermole, who hasn’t featured since missing a penalty against Portsmouth in the Checkatrade Trophy final, Ross added: “Possibly. He is another one, a bit like Aiden might be back involved Monday. It just strengthens us as a squad. “I was pleased for Max and Dylan this week, their performances and impact.”

A win at minimum to build the pressure on those above us as each week the intensity will hit fever levels.

Only 2 teams have beaten us in the league this season and Burton are one of them.
Jack Ross will be cautious I think.

With games coming thick and fast, knocks and recovery time subject to fitness this would be my starting 11..

GOALKEEPER
Not rocket science is it, big Jon.

DEFENCE
O'NIEN  FLANAGAN  BALDWIN  OVIEDO
The fist three keep their place and Oviedo comes in to provide experience and a more attacking threat.

MIDFIELD
An engine room of McGeouch and Laedbitter. Hard on Power but I just feel a McGeouch/Leadbitter pairing could be good and Catts needs a few more days.
In front would be Grigg, Honeyman and McGeady with Grigg just behind Wyke. Honeyman gets slated but IMO we are better with him and his all round energy.

ATTACK
Wyke even though really I see the three behind him as attackers playing off him.

In truth the last week has shown us that whoever starts will do the job.

McGeady remains doubtful for tomorrow. James, Matthews, Catts and Gooch all will sit out tomorrow. Jack Ross’ hopeful that Maguire can start to be involved with the first team in training on Thursday.

I agree with you on Honeyman, but if playing Wyke and Grigg I would use Morgan to add width.

So its Morgan for Honeyman for you and I can see that, fancy us having choices, whatever next

I honestly think Morgan is better to bring on as a sub with Sterling. Having the pace of them two to run defences ragged after Wyke has given them a hard time is a great option to have.

Could we not keep Hume at LB and Oviedo at left wing? You have some pace, trickery and experience there.

Finsihed 1-1. Wyke hit the bar and Leadbitter the post. Sounded like we were not quite on our game which is not surprising given how many games we have played in last 10 days and the mental and physical energy the players must be using up.

But we did not lose and we at least know it is all in our own hands (or feet!) now.

Thanks for joining me on Chatbox, barrowmackem, stevefizz and Black Cat Kiwi - always good to catch up

With our result and Charlton winning it's all up for grabs for runners up spot.

Luton, for me have it wrapped up for top spot.

It's anyone from four for second now.

Portsmouth and Barnsley have the easier run in. We really needed that win tonight.

I see Portsmouth nicking that second spot.

I have no doubt what so ever that we are up and could still take top spot. Yes we always could do with wins but last night was a tough game and we will have more to come, I dont expect us to lose any, I do expect us to win most if not all.

Maybe those rose tinted glasses are back but I sat last night and watched a team of winners playing a very good team of winners.

We have a game in hand but I have been told they dont count, its points on the board that count, well we now have the points, sit second and still have a game in hand.

Thanks Syd. I just came on here this morning to read a positive comment from you as I felt a bit deflated after last night. You're right of course - a win would have been better to put us further ahead but we are in the best position out of us, Barnsley and Portsmouth. Need to stay positive. Also need to realise that we did what Barnsley couldn't manage at the weekend. Repeat after me - "We are in a promotion spot with a game in hand. We are in a promotion spot with a game in hand.
