Chris Maguire has not been ruled out of Sunderland’s weekend trip to Bristol Rovers despite hobbling out of the win over Gillingham.
The Scot was forced off inside the opening 20 minutes at the Stadium of Light after a hefty challenge left him in need of treatment.

He tried to carry on but eventually had to concede defeat, with Lynden Gooch replacing him.
It was a blow for Maguire who had made a real impact from the bench against Accrington Stanley last week, and this was his first league start for more than a month.

But manager Jack Ross is still hopeful that Maguire could be involved at the Memorial Ground on Saturday.
He said: “It was an impact injury to his calf. He is quite sore - you can imagine how sore he would have to be to come off because he has been waiting for the opportunity and I thought he started well tonight.

“He’s sore just now but we’ll assess him again in the morning because sometimes these injuries can clear up just as fast as they come on.”

Ross also revealed that Duncan Watmore missed out with a minor groin problem but could also figure against Rovers.
And he explained his decision to drop defender Jack Baldwin from the squad.

“Duncan had a slight groin problem,” said Ross. “We could possibly have risked him tonight, but he will probably be back in the squad for the weekend.
“I just decided to rest Jack to give him a break mentally and physically, because he has played a lot of minutes mentally and physically.
“The squad I’ve got allows me to do that, and he will be the better for it.”

McGuire started very well and looked right up for it. Shame when he had to come off. Hope he is OK to be in the squad for the weekend. To be fair when Gooch came on he had a decent game.

Watmore is a bloody good option to have especially as an impact sub running defences ragged and the ball into the corner to close games down.

I think you will find our defence was better, statistically, when Baldwin n Flanagan were our central partnership. Having said that I rate the three of them on a par as all reasonable defenders but could do better.

If McGuire is out I would like to move O9 into midfield and bring Matthews in at full back.

Worth a try or not?

Ross seems insistent that ONien is now his first choice right back and I can see why, he attacks but can get back in an instant when he needs to defend.

A good point about getting back.

If you look at the highlights of the Gillingham game.
James headed out in the left back position but the ball found a blue shirt..  McGeady wss still sauntering back.

Resulted in their goal.

Defensively we are obviously not a watertight unit.
We are two thirds into the season so difficult to see it improving mucn.

14 games to go...
Very Happy
