BLACKPOOL V SUNDERLAND
1st January 2019
KO 15.00
BLOOMFIELD ROAD

With 7,000 Mackems descending on Blackpool we can be sure of a party atmosphere by the sea side.

For anyone fancying a donkey ride I would suggest safe sex, you just dont know what you may catch.

Let's hope that the boys in red & white got their excess turkey out of their system against Shrewsbury and we see a more dynamic performance and three points.

But what about the team?

I hope Honeyman is back because I think he is missed and I would be tempted to make a few changes.

With Oviedo injured the keeper and back 4 probably pick themselves and Maja must start because he scores goals.

So who would you pick and who do you think Ross will go for?

A comment I made on another thread was the team on Saturday looked downbeat/jaded. The football wisdom is usually do not change a winning team...however with 4 games in 10 days.. is that really wise.

If we play Wyke and Maja together then only one winger... from McGeady, Gooch and Watmore. Maguire has had a dip in form as well so perhaps push Power upfield and play McGeouch with Catts

Let's see what Ross does

I think he definatly needs to freshen things up, not major surgery but a wee tinker

I would go with your team selection. Keeps the others on their toes and itching to get on and put in a decent performance.

Sunderland game on New Year's Day

Report Message |  Email Message To A Friend | Reply To Message
Fred, copied below is a statement that has been in the public domain via social media for a couple of weeks now. It was posted up by the Sunderland supporter group called Red and White Army.

It should be remembered that it is Owen Oyston who has agreed that Sunderland can take over Blackpool's ground; if the result for Blackpool is negatively affected by that decision, it will be down to him.

"Sunderland supporters have travelled in impressive numbers this season but even by their standards the trip to Blackpool on New Years Day will stand out, with more than 7000 fans due to attend. Blackpool Supporters Trust are caling on visiting fans to help them take a stance against their owner Owen Oyston.

Andrew Hird, chair of independent supporters group Red and White Army said "Whatever level of football you're talking about, 7000 away fans is fantastic and we'll all be in party mood on 1st January. However, as a supporter base that's suffered ourselves in recent years we couldn't let this fixture pass without acknowledging the plight of the long suffering Blackpool fans who continue to boycott against their hugely unpopular owner Owen Oyston. We're realistic enough to know supporters will fancy a pint at half time, however, we urge supporters to show solidarity with fellow football fans and not spend more than is absolutely necessary in the ground"

Christine Seddon, chair of Blackpool Supporters Trust (BST) explained how thousands of long standing supporters have made the difficult decision to stay away. "The visit to Bloomfield Road by Sunderland fans on New Year's Day will ensure the largest crowd of the season for the Oystons and will significantly outnumber Blackpool fans inside the ground. The BST's 'Not A Penny More' stance means they have chosen to not renew season tickets, not to purchase match day tickets for home games, not to buy any club merchandise. BST is also organising an ethical boycott of those businesses that sponsor the club as well as other local businesses run by the club's owners. Quite simply, many supporters will not give the club another penny of their money and have withdrawn their custom until such time as we get a change of ownership."

BST are urging Sunderland fans to support their cause by doing the following.

a) Not purchasing any match programmes or lottery tickets when at the ground
b) Not purchasing any food or drinks from the kiosks on the concourse inside the ground
c) Giving your custom instead to the pubs, chippies etc in the streets around the ground
d) Joining us in the spirit of fans united at our usual pre-match vigil/protest outside the West Stand

Apparently Blackpool havent lost at home on New Years Day since 1966. Not sure how many times they have played at home on these days mind.

I also think we have a naff New Years day record.

Need a reversal tomorrow. They lose, we win.

Must admit I found it strange the first time but I quite like it now, just the crowd noise is like being there.

Looking forward to it and the game against Newcastle will be on so no cold night in Sunderland for me.

Just back from a bike ride, bit nippy on the face. Well footy day again, I fear we will have a dip in results now as Wyke and Watmore are bedded in. Maguire seems to have really gone off the boil, time for a rest I think. And when Mathews is back imo get Onien in the middle. Power has lost a lot since his red that wasn't, him and Catts don't look like its working. Some decisions for Ross I think.

Jack Ross will freshen up his side this afternoon as Sunderland look to make a winning start to 2019 at Blackpool.
Ross kept faith on Saturday against Shrewsbury Town with the same starting XI that had beaten Bradford City three days earlier, but the Black Cats were sluggish in the first half and had to come from behind to salvage a 1-1 draw.

We need more goals.. as our defence is poor... they have hit a post and we cannot it seems win any defensive headers

How many goals have we let in so far, 0, I thought so.

We are by far the better team and I expect at least one more second half.

Half time report

McLaughlin, doing okay, defence is not great atm..need a to come and claim high balls more

James and O9 are solid

Catts has been yellowed, not playing like he was beginning of the season.. Power is a little cautious (3 reds)

Gooch is in a poor run of form, although he is bringing the ball under control better. McGeady looks better than he did on Saturday.

Wyke is ring rusty but getting there a couple of good headed flick ons

Maja is magic

Unless we have a big CB, leave the back four alone..if Catts starts fouling get him off and put McGeouch on. Likewise replace Gooch with the young lad Kimi..etc
