Charlie Methven: Nothing could prepare me and Stewart Donald for the passion of Sunderland fans
Charlie Methven has admitted that he and Stewart Donald didn't quite realise how much the club meant to fans until after they attended the Wolves game

Sunderland executive director Charlie Methven has admitted that nothing can quite prepare anyone to takeover a club like the Black Cats with their passionate supporters.

Methven and Stewart Donald bought the club in the summer from previous owner Ellis Short back in May before the final game of the Championship season against Wolves.

Sunderland's relegation to League One had already been confirmed but the two new owners attended the game at the Stadium of Light. And it was only then that they released the size of the club they had purchased.
Methven told Jim White on TalkSport: "The passionate support is something that nothing can prepare you for.
“Before we went up there every man and his dog in football told us: ‘you’re going into a goldfish bowl; North East football, you won’t know what’s hit you’. And you think yeah, yeah.
“But until it’s hit you, it’s true that you really can’t prepare for what it is that hits you.

“I remember the first day we were up there was the last game of last season against Wolves at home. Sunderland had just been relegated and Wolves promoted, but there was still 30-odd thousand people in the stadium. Stewart just looked around and said: ‘[Exhaling] This is big, isn’t it?’ Of course, he didn’t just mean the stadium, he meant the responsibility.

“Even though they’d been relegated the passion of the crowd was still absolutely electric. It’s a city that identifies absolutely with its football club.”
In the next seven months Donald and Methven, with the help of new manager Jack Ross have absolutely transformed Sunderland AFC. A football club once completely cut off from its fanbase is now like night and day to last term.

Donald and Methven have worked hard on re-engaging the supporters and perhaps the crowning achievement of their hard work will be Boxing Day where Methven revealed that ticket sales have now surpassed 40,000 for the clash against Bradford City.
"We’ve sold over 40,000 tickets in advance of the Bradford game and we’re still five or six days out," Methven said.
“The average attendance at this level is Man City with 28,000 and we’re averaging over 30,000 this season.
“You know, this is a club that for the last five years has barely won a game, so Stewart and I are physically humbled by the passion and intensity and faith that the fans have in this football club.
“It is quite tear-jerking at times and we just think 'crikey this is astonishing'.”

Methven was on TalkSport to promote the Netflix documentary Sunderland Til I Die.
Of the Fulwell73 Production, he said: "I’ve seen the whole lot. I watched it as a punter, if you like, and there was so much there that chimed with my fan experience at Oxford where Stewart and I grew up.
“You have those seasons that you hope go well and end up going down in flames. The people you put your trust in end up failing. The arguments, the rows, the door slamming. That, in a way, is the reality of most football.

“I think when people saw the Man City one it was amazing and glossy and impressive that a club that itself was a shambles not so long ago could be so quickly magnificent and everything running just like a Rolls Royce.
“What the Sunderland one does is give a much better insight into the realities of football and how a football club interacts with its fans, and vice-versa.”

Re his last couple of comments about the Man City programme on Amazon, I only watched one episode and couldn’t be be bothered after that although I might get round to watching it in full sometime.

There’s a thread on a City forum called Bluemoon about your Netflix series.  Lots on there are saying that ours was over sanitised and yours is a far better watch.  Plenty of nice comments about you old buggers up there as well.  Strange  Wink

The netflix series is a must watch IMO, we all know the story but the behind the scenes is mind blowing and definitely changes views.

And please Sid, dont upset our members by reminding them of their ages, we cant all be young bucks like us two.

Charlie certainly gets about to gauge the feelings of the fans.. I was speaking to him in Tonic at half one in the morning after the Barnsley game..
