Sunderland AFC owner Stewart Donald told the Roker Rapport Podcast today that we are close to signing a central defender and striker - and that we have further money to strengthen where needed.

Sunderland are set to strengthen their playing squad, with the club meeting two players today and hope to get them on board ‘relatively quickly’.
Stewart Donald joined us on the Roker Rapport podcast earlier today - which you can listen to in full later today - and revealed that a striker and centre-back are close to signing, as well as saying that he expects the club to buy, not sell, during this transfer window.

We seen two players today, both of whom we would hope would sign relatively quickly.
Opposite ends of the pitch, centre-back and a striker.

Donald also said the striker would come in regardless of Josh Maja’s situation.
We also asked Sunderland’s owner whether the club could make Charlie Wyke level signings during this window:

We can. We can do whatever Jack [Ross] wants to do, within reason.
We have to remember the current wage structure, we don’t want someone coming in unsettling the boat and earning two or three times more than anyone else we signed.
But will we back Jack Ross? Yes.
We have got ourselves into a position where it would be criminal not to strengthen our squad to try and make sure we have the best squad for the back end of the season and we are committed to doing that.
But that is down to Jack and his management team, Tony Coton and Richard [Hill] to pick the players.

The podcast will be interview shortly but follow us on Twitter and subscribe on iTunesAcastSpotify and YouTube to listen to the podcast for free as soon as it’s available.

This sounds scarily like an owner willing to invest in the team so we can finish where we need to. What on earth is going on?

Stewart Donald was kind enough to be a guest on the Roker Rapport podcast this afternoon, where he revealed that Sunderland met two players today - a centre-back and a striker - who he hoped would sign relatively quickly.
The centre-back is Burnley’s Irish defender Jimmy Dunne, who has just returned to Turf Moor after a successful six-month loan spell with Scottish Premiership side Heart of Midlothian.
The 21-year-old is expected to sign a loan deal that will see him remain at Sunderland until the end of the season after travelling up to Wearside yesterday.
Dunne played 14 times for Hearts this season - starting every game and scoring two goals - before an ankle injury at the end of November kept him out of action. He was officially recalled by Burnley earlier today.
He joined Burnley in 2016 from Manchester United and has also spent time on loan at Barrow, as well as helping Accrington Stanley get promoted to League One last season after joining the club on loan in January.

Just a small point about quality of signings or teams. a good few of our supporters were full of praise for Eddie Howe at Bournemouth but most of his defenders were signed when they were at league one and two level.

We sign an ex ManU academy player and he is condemned before he arrives.

Will he be the one?

Will Grigg has been linked with a move to Sunderland this transfer window by a report in the Daily Mail.
The Wigan striker helped fire the Latics to the Championship last season, as well as scoring the goal that knocked Manchester City out of the League Cup.
The Northern Ireland international hasn't been prolific this season, scoring just four times in 10 starts, leading to SAFC being linked with the 27-year-old.
However, journalist Alan Nixon says there has been no contact yet between Sunderland and Wigan.

I was just about to post this myself:

Sunderland are interested in signing Will Grigg from Wigan Athletic in the January transfer window, according to The Daily Mail (print edition, page 72, Tuesday, January 8, 2019).

It has been reported that League One outfit Sunderland want striker Grigg on loan from Championship side Wigan.

Brilliant signing for Sunderland
Grigg has made 10 starts and six substitute appearances in the Championship for Wigan so far this season, scoring four goals and providing one assist in the process, according to WhoScored.
The 27-year-old striker is not having the best of times this season, but the Northern Ireland international has a brilliant record at the League One level.

According to Transfermarkt.co.uk, the striker scored 19 goals and provided four assists in 43 League One appearances for Wigan during the 2017-18 season.
Back in 2015-16, Grigg scored 25 goals and provided six assists in 40 League One matches for the Latics, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk.

With Sunderland aiming to finish in the top two of the League One table this season, Grigg will be a brilliant signing for Jack Ross’s side in their quest to win automatic promotion to the Championship

This seems very speculative to me though and Donald said we'd talked to the potential new striker yesterday. I;ve also see that Sinclair is considering going back. That;s fine I reckon.

Sunderland have seen a bid for Wigan Athletic striker Will Grigg knocked-back, according to reports. The Black Cats have reportedly seen their first offer for the Northern Irish international turned down, but are thought to still be keen to continue their pursuit of the frontman. Reports from the Sun claim that the Wearsiders have submitted a first bid of 'up to £200,000', which was knocked-back by Wigan. Manager Jack Ross has confirmed that he is looking to bolster his striking options before the end of the month and Grigg is believed to have been identified as a key target. Boost your retirement finances We're independent and compare the whole market. Use our free online calculator to quickly see how much you could release Promoted by Key And while their first bid may have been knocked-back, Sunderland are not expected to end their interest in the former MK Dons striker. Wigan have completed a deal to bring Cardiff City forward Anthony Pilkington to the club, in a move which could open up the door for Grigg to leave. The 27-year-old has netted just three times for the Latics this season and has fallen down the pecking order in recent weeks. That could provide a boost for the Wearsiders, who are keen to strengthen their attacking options in the winter transfer window.

Sunderland’s board have committed to supporting manager Jack Ross as best they can in this summer’s transfer market.

This summer the new hierarchy took over a club which had been in real financial trouble, and had to make promises to the Football League about their stewardship.

But on the back of a first half of the season which has put them in the promotion picture without yet being in the automatic places, and some hugely encouraging attendances topped by the 46,039 on Boxing Day, the board has made a conscious decision to try to leave nothing to chance this month.
“We had a holding company board meeting of me, Juan (Sartori) and Stewart (Donald), and said that on any level it makes sense to say to Jack, whatever you need, we will give it to you,” director Charlie Methvenexplained. “We don’t want to look back in may and say, ‘If we’d just done X or Y...’ and we certainly don’t want Jack turning around in May and saying, ‘I asked for X or Y and if you’d given me it we’d have done it (won promotion).’
“Knowing that he’s a sensible guy who wouldn’t suggest something that wasn’t feasible, we just told him to try and minimise the reasons why we might end up not doing what we need to do.”
Having signed central defender Jimmy Dunne on loan from Burnley on Wednesday, Sunderland are now searching for a centre-forward to replace Jerome Sinclair, who has returned from his loan at Watford. They have bid for Wigan Athletic’s Will Grigg.
After that, Methven said they may go for a third player. Their reported interest in Joe Willock – who Arsenal are not prepared to loan out this month – suggests it could be a midfielder if Sunderland’s recruitment team can find one with the right qualities.
“We need to be better at set pieces so we went out into the market to find a centre-back who is excellent in the air,” Methven explained. “TC (head of recruitment Tony Coton) was given the instruction to find a mobile, 6ft 4in centre-back who’d be able to play the way Jack wants to play. There was no point bringing a clogger in.
“The other reason why any team might end up not getting promoted is because the goals dry up a bit because players lose a bit of form, a bit of confidence – whatever it might be – so you just need something different just to keep the goal meter ticking over and that’s what we’re out in the market looking for now.
“I would expect us to bring in two and maybe three if nothing happens with Josh (Maja). There’s been no real suggestion (of a bid). Not only have been there been no bids, there’s been no significant interest.”
Maja, the Black Cats’ top-scorer with 15 goals this season, is out of contract in the summer, and his agent says he will not be signing another, although the player has told the hierarchy he wants to stay. If he is allowed to reach the end of his contract, he will be available for a negligible, tribunal-set compensation fee.

Birmingham City striker Greg Stewart was recalled by the club last week after he spent the first half of the season on-loan at Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock.
Stewart scored eight goals and picked up eight assists in 16 games for Killie and he was linked with a move to Sunderland as soon as his loan spell ended.
He has also now been linked with a move to Aberdeen but he will not be staying with parent club Birmingham City after their manager Garry Monk says recalling Stewart was a club decision and that the player is not in his plans

Will Grigg remains Sunderland's top striking target for the January transfer window.

The Black Cats launched a bid for the 27-year-old last week and have now returned with an increased offer.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Sunderland are hoping to sign Will Grigg this month

Wigan boss Paul Cook said last week that he didn't want to lose the Northern Ireland international but he was an unused substitute as the Latics beat Aston Villa 3-0 on Saturday.

Grigg has struggled for regular football this season, scoring four goals in 18 appearances.
"It's hard in football, because for a manager to say 'nobody is for sale' would just be wrong," Cook said.

"But are we looking to sell players? Not a chance. Why would we?
"Will Grigg is one of the mainstays of what has brought me success at Wigan Athletic.
"You only need go back to the Manchester City game, and the only player to ever score a goal without a single team-mate in the same half as himself!

"I can't stop speculation, no-one can. I can't stop other clubs bidding for our players.
"But all I can is go on and on about partnerships...and for me, the Grigg and Powell partnership has been just fantastic.
"The front four partnership of Powell, Grigg, Jacobs, Massey is a proper front four.
"Will knows what I am waiting for, to get Will back in the team - the other three to be fit and available."

Jack Ross is keen to add a striker this month, and in particular an orthodox centre-forward.
"Charlie is our only number nine, really," Ross said last week.
“Josh likes to play in those little areas.
“So I think we need another type where everyone would say, ‘he’s a definite striker’.
“You’ve seen the importance of that in recent weeks I think, where we’re ahead in games or need to nick one, I think it would help us.”

Grigg is the obvious candidate having won promotion from the third tier on four separate occasions.
He scored 19 goals last season as Wigan stormed to the League One title and was the top scorer in the division back in 2015/16.
Sunderland's pursuit is unrelated to the future of Josh Maja, who is still yet to decide on his Black Cats future.
Maja missed the 1-1 draw with Luton Town on Saturday due to a stomach bug with his contractual situation unchanged.
Should he leave this month then Sunderland would go back into the market for further striking firepower.
Jack Ross said on Saturday that 'nothing was imminent' in terms of signing a new striker, but said that the club were working hard to try and boost his options as soon as possible.

We have not seen the new CB yet.. but let's hope he is good...

We do need more strike power...Sinclair leaving is also a good step leaving room for somebody new to join the squad asap please.

No news on either Catts or Ovideo...both goodish useful players but expensive... so I guess they are staying for the rest of the season?
