Speculation and anticipation.. Empty Speculation and anticipation..

Yes, it is nice to be looking upwards rather than downwards...

We have played 20 games and amassed 43 points
2.15 points per game.
26 games still to be played.
Over 46 games if that was maintained we would have 99 points.
Last year, Wigan won the league with 98 points.
Blackburn also went up automatically with 96 points.

Over a 3 game sequence, of average form WLD, 4 points would be gained which is equal to 1.33 points per game.
So over our remaining 26 games, just average form would yield another 35 points.

So.. 43 points plus 35 points = 78 points.
Last year, 78 points was a comfortable place off place.

So for me, with my reality head on, we have a lot to look forward to as we speed towards 46 games.

We have had a lot of draws, but one defeat in twenty games  is impressive.
It is results that count.
Silky football is well nie impossible in this very physical league we find ourselves in.

So far things are looking good....pretty impressive when for most of the teams playing at the SOL it's their day at wembley so they lift their game..and when we're away we're a massive scalp for someone to beat at their place,so once again they lift their game

Sounds like we're in a fairly happy position, but even though it's 20 years ago, I can't banish the thought of that game v Charlton from my mind and I wouldn't like a repeat.

That was my worst ever return trip from London EVER, so it's automatic promotion for me or nothing !!

The second half of the season is always a strange part because we have all played one another so no real surprises.

We are not the best set of players IMO but must have one of the best mentalities and be one of the best teams and that in the main is down to Ross.

Ross we know is from the Scottish leagues and admits that just about every team is new to him along with most , he goes into the second period with more knowledge and that is good when you look at what he has achieved so far.

Many thought that automatic promotion was a certainly for the mighty Sunderland but Ross has never given out that message. When you see the team play good or bad you can see there is no complacency or big I am attitude but there is a real feeling of confidence and a fantastic winning spirit.

That gives me confidence and with more players to come in from injury or the January window I am looking forward to the rest of the season.

We are certainly winning a lot of games or at worst drawing.

However our performances are not in the Man City class, ie streets ahead of the opposition. Maja at al are scoring goals and McLaughlin is making a couple of great saves.

So we have the happy knack of winning tight games... long may it continue.

I couple of decent buys in Jan should help the squad. Imho a CB, a creative midfielder and a striker (swap for Sinclair?)

Oh my goodness yes, I didn't go but watched on TV and I cried for hours at the end of the match. Took me two weeks to get to the point I could even talk about it. Never felt so bad in my entire life (about football anyway)

Funnily enough later that summer I bumped into Niall Quinn, at Dublin airport, on way back from my birthday weekend away. He was with his wife and children coming back for pre-season training. I had a little chat with him and he said it was awful in the dressing room after that match, but on the way home (after a few beeers I expect) the team made a pact to win promotion the following season - and of course they did with a record points total of 105 Very Happy

So as Sunderland fans we should know we can go from depths of despair to heights of pure delight in the space of a year. Rollercoaster ride indeed Very Happy
