Re: ??
You've not used any brackets so taking each part in turn does, as Gil says, add up to 32

WTF
It can only be 2 if written thus :-
(5+5) - (2 x 4)

Nope...1f there are no brackets you do 'of' then division then multiply then addition then subtract. That imho the order. Probably wrong

Never came across that in my City and Guilds practical mathematics course.

Re: ??
Trying to think out of the box I first though 5+5 related to the games you’ve played this season, if you ignore the other bit I’ve solved it.

Re: ??
The brackets are always implied around multiplications. The answer is therefore 2.

The multiplication symbol comes AFTER the 2 so by your rules the answer is 32

Re: ??
No the brackets are implied around the numbers either side of the multiplication sign.

Yes, so (5+5 - 2) x(4) =32

I think someone is trying to be too clever and has just shown how totally incapable he is of understanding basic English and maths. Haven't you Dave?

So my distinction in City and Guilds Practical Mathematics counts for nothing then?
Of course that was over 50 years ago so perhaps the rules have changed!

Re: ??
Well, as sunders and horatio carter say, the BODMAS rules apply if this was just a mathematics problem -
Rules of Ordering in Mathematics - BODMAS
So for 5+5-2x4= you would multiply first to get 2X4= 8 then add 5+5 to get 10 and then subtract to get 2.
But as this is posted in the Sunderland AFC Thread I assume it's more of a teaser than that. Sorry my brain is not up to it but assume Sid MCFC is on the right lines ?
Rules of Ordering in Mathematics - BODMAS
- Brackets (parts of a calculation inside brackets always come first)
- Orders (numbers involving powers or square roots
- Division
- Multiplication
- Addition
- Subtraction
So for 5+5-2x4= you would multiply first to get 2X4= 8 then add 5+5 to get 10 and then subtract to get 2.

Re: ??
5+5 10 games played 30 points available
-2 x 4 2 points dropped in 4 games
So - 3 1 game lost would complete the conundrum giving 19
