Sunderland v Peterborough United

Post  cyprussyd on 2018-09-29, 4:05 pm

Sunderland v Peterborough United
Tuesday October 2nd
KO 19.45

Can we hut 35,000, no longer bothered TBH.

I'm really looking forward to this game but  for the first time this season it will I will be nervous, this game will tell us how well we are doing.

We know Catts is out but will Loovens, Hume and Gooch be fit.

Power will replace Catts and Oviedo Hume with either Mathews or Ozturk coming in for Loovens. If Gooch does not make it, I hope he does I would move Maguire to the left and bring McGready in.

Fortunately we have decent cover for the injured and suspended it just means the bench may not be as strong.

Its a long long season and regardless of Tuesdays result I still see us going up.

There's going to be some important players missing for us on Tuesday. It gives others a chance though and we had a strong bench today. I worry about Matthews though.

With Catts out we may now see the best of McGeuch as a holding midfielder with the more industrious Power on from the beginning.

Attack from the outset and keep them pinned back. I'm fairly relaxed about the result, although I never like to lose, as come April/May I expect to be higher up the league than Peterborough. Squad strength will tell eventually and in McGeady I think firepower will see us score more goals than the silly ones we concede.

POWER  MCGEOUCH
MAGUIRE  MGREADY OVIEDO
MAJA  SINCLAIR

But it wont be the starting 11

Match stats: 18 February, 1967 FA Cup Fourth Round -

 Sunderland 7, Posh 1

 Attendance: 43,998.

Match receipts: £10.600.

Posh: Millington, Johnson, Crawford, Cooper, Wright, Kirkham, Watson, Beesley, Mason, Byrne, Conmy. Sub Adams (for Johnson).

Sunderland: Montgomery, Irwin, Harvey, Todd, Kinnell, Baxter, Kerr, O’Hare, Martin, Herd, Mulhall. Sub Suggett.

Goals: Posh - Watson (55 mins). Sunderland - O’Hare (13), Martin (14, 27 & 47), Kerr (18 & 50), Baxter (pen, 74).

Match report snippets from The Evening Telegraph of the time: “Peterborough United suffered their heaviest defeat since joining the Football League when losing 7-1 at Sunderland.

“There was never any doubt Posh would be beaten for they were jittery at the start, failed to weather the all-important opening 20 minutes and found themselves 4-0 down at half-time. It was a miracle Sunderland didn’t go on to score 10. “

The First Division masters toyed and carved up the upstart Third Division club. “The Posh defence hasn’t a streak of ruthlessness about it. The Posh attack wastes chances as though they believe they are already 5-0 up. “Posh have the haggard look of a Fourth Division side about them.”

Looking  back at yesterdays game...I thought Ozturk would have replaced Loovens..so will Mathews keep his place?
Gooch staying on when injured rules him out imo...I would bring McGeady in
Power to start along McGeouch...a certainty
I would like to see Sinclair start because yesterday I thought Maja could have done with some help up front
What does the manager think though?.....suppose we'll have to wait and see Smile

I was at that match too but what I can't believe is with a crowd of 43,998 the match receipts were £10,600. That is just under 25 pence per person or in those days about 5 bob. Those were the days my friend (although that wasn't a hit until 1968).

Sunderland are back in Stadium of Light action tonight as Peterborough United come to town (KO 7.45pm).
With ten games played, just four points separate the fourth-placed Black Cats and the Posh, who sit second, ahead of the highly-anticipated Sky Bet League One clash.
And it promises to be a memorable night under the lights on Wearside.
Tickets are still available, and prices start from just £20 for adults and £7.50 for under-16s, with further information available by clicking here.
The Lads endured a hard-fought encounter with Coventry City last time out, as injuries piled up and they were forced to settle for a point at the Ricoh Arena.
Glenn Loovens and Denver Hume were both forced off inside the opening 25 minutes, while Lynden Gooch played through the pain late on after sustaining a hamstring injury.
Loovens and Hume will both undergo scans, but Jack Ross hopes the USA international will return to action inside two weeks.
Lee Cattermole will also miss Tuesday’s game against the Posh and serve a one-match ban after picking up a fifth yellow card of the campaign.
Peterborough, meanwhile, will also be hoping to return to winning ways after seeing their promotion push held up by Blackpool.
Steve Evans’ side head to Wearside having lost just one league game this season, but they had to come from behind on Saturday as the Tangerines forced a 2-2 stalemate.
The free-scoring Posh will pose a real test for Ross’ defence, having netted a league-high 26 goals this season.
Matt Godden tops their scoring charts having bagged seven goals this campaign, but Jason Cummings is hot on his team-mate's heels after scoring six so far this term.
But the Black Cats have attacking options of their own, with Aiden McGeady and Jerome Sinclair pushing to replace the injured Gooch and earn a place in the starting XI.
Josh Maja will also be hoping to keep up his early-season form, and add to a haul of three goals in his last two appearances at the Stadium of Light.
FOLLOW THE ACTION
Tickets for the game are available and information on how to purchase is available by clicking here.
SAFSee passes are available now for overseas and UK-based supporters, including seasonal and match-by-match options.
BBC Radio Newcastle’s Nick Barnes will be broadcasting live right here on safc.com from 7pm.
As ever, there will be comprehensive coverage across our digital channels including safc.com’s matchday blog and live updates on Twitter via @SunderlandAFC.

Not many better sights than the SOL under the lights on a night match. Huge game tonight as well.
