Sunderland AFC are delighted to confirm the arrival of goalkeeper Max Johnstone as their latest addition to the academy.
Johnstone, 19, has penned a one-year deal on Wearside and will go into Elliott Dickman’s under-23s squad for the 2018-19 season.
The stopper, who has been on trial since the start of pre-season, joins the Black Cats after spells with Manchester United and Fleetwood Town.
Speaking about the deal, Johnstone said: “I’m buzzing to sign, the last few weeks have been really good and all the lads have helped me settle into the club.Johnstone, 19, has penned a one-year deal on Wearside and will go into Elliott Dickman’s under-23s squad for the 2018-19 season.

“The facilities here are absolutely unreal. I’ve been so impressed with everything, it is a massive club to represent and I can’t wait to get started. It is an important year for me, I’ve got to get my head down and work hard.

Academy manager, Paul Reid added: “Max was a player who was flagged up after he came in during the previous season. He was someone we wanted to take another look at and Mark Prudhoe was very complimentary of him after he came in last year.

“His attitude has been brilliant since he came in and it has been nice to see him improve over the weeks. He is a good size and character, and he is someone we think can develop.

Let's hope that goalkeeping is an area we improve massively this season.
