New Black Cats owner Stewart Donald has been very vocal about what the club are trying to do on transfers, but he has promised to row back a little

Stewart Donald has promised to be less talkative about Sunderland’s transfer targets after conceding he has got “sidetracked” during his first transfer window.
The Black Cats’ new owner has brought a refreshing openness to dealings at the Stadium of Light since buying the club in May, through a variety of outlets. Donald has given supporters a greater insight into the difficulties of buying and selling players, but it has caused frustration with some behind the scenes at the club.
This has been Donald’s first transfer window as the owner of a Football League club, and he admitted this week he is more “itchy” about transfers than his manager and recruitment team.

Now he appears to have signalled that on this aspect of the club, he will try to leave most of the talking to them.
“I have set the scene as much as I can on the playing side so the fans had a more informed view and a better understanding of the issues the club face,” he tweeted on Sunday. “That is done now.
“Any more info is too much agreed. Jack Ross can update fans as to where we are moving forward – it should be him.

“I primarily use Twitter to try and help fans who have genuine issues with their experience of the club or have ideas. I have got sidetracked in transfers as I don’t like false rumours. Natural given the time of year I suppose but time for Jack to sort those. I have enough to do.”

Donald’s refreshing willingness to engage direct with supporters has given a greater insight into the difficulties the club faces in the transfer market. He too seems to have learnt a little about how much harder it is to move on players on contracts much longer and more expensive than those he dealt with at previous club Eastleigh.
The Black Cats have a number of high-earning players they need to offload because the wage bill is not compatible with that of League One club. In order to have his buyout ratified, he made assurances to the Football League about getting it down.

It is to be hoped Donald’s apparent rowing back on transfer updates does not extend to other areas of the club, and there is no reason to think it will. The transparency he has brought has been a positive, and largely appreciated by supporters who were too often kept in the dark by the previous regime.

Talking about transfer targets, and optimistic updates on what Donald expected to happen at any given time has, however, raised expectations and when they have not been met, some have grown frustrated.
With no permanent signings allowed after 5pm on August 9, and no loans or foreign sales permitted beyond August 31, fans will soon be in a position to judge Donald and his team by their actions, rather than their words.

I have heard that he has been getting a fair amount of abuse from some of our "fans" on there, so this may be a factor in this..

Sadly yes, the abusers are getting abuse from the majority of fans but some of the stuff he is getting is embarrassing.
