Sunderland have completed the signing of former Everton and Swansea City youth defender Jack Bainbridge. The 20-year-old joins on a free transfer from the Liberty Stadium, and will link up with the under-23 side under the guidance of Elliott Dickman.

Bainbridge started his career with the Toffees, signing as a 14-year-old, progressing his way through the youth ranks at under-18 and under-23 level before making the switch to Wales in August 2017.

The centre-half failed to make a first-team appearance for the Swans but was a regular for their under-23 side last season in the Checkatrade Trophy and Premier League 2.

Centre-back Jack Bainbridge has become Sunderland’s seventh signing of the summer.
But unlike the other six, the 20-year-old arrives more with a view to playing in Elliott Dickman’s under-23s.

Bainbridge arrives on a free transfer from Swansea City, who released him at the end of the season.
Like Anton Forrester, who appeared as a trialist in Tuesday’s 1-0 pre-season friendly defeat at Darlington, Bainbridge is a product of Everton’s academy.

He signed for the Toffees as a 14-year-old, and featured for their under-23s before moving to south Wales last summer. But while he played for the under-23s in the league and Football League Trophy, he did not do enough to win a new contract.
On arriving at the club, executive director Charlie Methven spoke of his wish to strengthen the club’s junior sides with signings from elsewhere, as well as home-grown Academy of Light products.

Manager Jack Ross spoke of the need to add further centre-backs to his squad to complement arrivals Alim Ozturk and Tom Flanagan, but it seems that will not be Bainbridge’s job in the short-term.

John O’Shea and Marc Wilson were released last summer, and Tyias Browning returned to Everton at the end of his loan, and Jake Clarke-Salter returned to Chelsea. Jack Rodwell, Billy Jones, and Brendan Galloway, who can also play in the middle, have also left.
It seems that both parties have agreed that Lamine Kone’s future lies elsewhere, though a club willing to meet his wage demands and Sunderland’s asking price is yet to emerge.
