Sunderland players threatening to stay away face moment of truth this week
Jack Ross' squad will assemble on Wednesday and the club expects every player to return, unless given dispensation by the manager

Sunderland’s first-teamers are due to report back for pre-season training on Wednesday.
New manager Jack Ross will assemble his squad for the first time, although it will be something of a sparse gathering with departures far outnumbering the one new signing confirmed, Alim Ozturk.
Four players - John O’Shea, Billy Jones, Kazenga LuaLua, and Marc Wilson - have been released, Jason Steele has moved to Brighton, Fabio Borini’s impending switch to AC Milan renders his return unnecessary, Paddy McNair’s move to Middlesbrough may also have gone through by then, while Wahbi Khazri and Bryan Oviedo are still away at the World Cup - at least for a couple more days.
Ross’ first job will be to see just who turns up. Or, more precisely, who stays away.

Because last week, new owner Stewart Donald revealed that some players’ agents have informed the club that their clients will not be returning to Wearside under any circumstances.
Well, we will find out soon enough whether they are men of their word or merely all bluff and bluster.

Unless and until buyers are found who are willing to pay Sunderland’s asking price, the Black Cats expect every player to fulfil their contract.
If they go AWOL, they will be in breach of their contracts and can expect to be dealt with harshly.
Sunderland’s squad contains more than its fair share of bad apples, causing problems behind the scenes which have contributed to the club’s back-to-back relegations.
Now there are some who are clearly agitating for moves and, to be frank, Sunderland will be delighted to see the back of them.
There are players within the squad who believe that League One is beneath them. They are Premier League - or, at the very least, Championship - players, and deserve to play at that level and be paid accordingly.
Let us gloss over for a moment the fact that their contributions, or lack thereof, in recent seasons hardly back up their inflated opinions of themselves.
If those players want to leave, fine.

Although many of them are likely to discover that alternative employers may not value their services so highly.
Given Sunderland’s situation, the reality is that there will have to be some give and take in the transfer window.
Subject to takers being found, Donald is ready to compromise with fair-minded players who want to move on and make a fresh start elsewhere.
However he has also warned that those who play hardball will be met with an equally tough response.
Having brought the club to the lowest point in its history while bleeding it dry, these wantaway players must not be allowed to add insult to injury by walking out on the club and attempting to dictate the terms of their departure.
