Sunderland: Ellis Short & Stewart Donald meet with EFL executives about takeover

Stewart Donald's proposed takeover of Sunderland was announced at the end of April

Stewart Donald and Sunderland owner Ellis Short met with English Football League executives on Friday to discuss Donald's takeover bid for the club.
Eastleigh chairman Donald has a deal in place to purchase the Black Cats from Short, but requires formal approval.
After the meeting in London, American Short declined to answer any questions from BBC Sport regarding details of the deal and its progression.
Sunderland were relegated from the Championship in April.
The BBC was told at the beginning of May that Donald had agreed the sale of his National League side Eastleigh, but so far there has been no official confirmation.
He has previously said if the deal for Sunderland was allowed to go through, it would be "spectacular".
It has been reported Short has agreed to clear the debt in order to push through the sale of a club that has been relegated in successive seasons after spending 10 years in the Premier League.

Following a meeting with the EFL on Friday, and the provision of further information, we can now confirm that the proposed sale of the club could be concluded as early as next week.
We would like to place on record our thanks to the EFL for their assistance during the process, at what is a very busy time of the football calendar for them.
We are unable to make further comment at this time.

Stewart Donald has promised Sunderland supporters that he will maintain 'good communication' during his time on Wearside.

Donald is heading for Sunderland after the EFL told him he was free to complete his takeover on Friday afternoon. The official transfer is expected to take place in the early days of this week and Donald's consortium will then face up to the enormous challenge that awaits them.

Donald has pledged to be open throughout. Writing on twitter, he said: "Lot of questions to answer for Sunderland fans. "I will try to answer them in the next few days through the official media and also fan groups etc. "It will be a regular thing so we can keep good communication. Ask anything but I can't answer all on social media just not enough time - sorry," One of Donald's first tasks will be to appoint a manager who will oversee one of the busiest summers in the club's history.
