Former Rangers boss Ally McCoist keen to take over Sunderland after Scotland target Michael O’Neill rejected Black Cats

The Ibrox legend has been out of the game since leaving Gers two years ago

That has cleared the way for Scotland to talk to O’Neill — and propelled McCoist into the frame for Sunderland.

Black Cats chief Martin Bain is hunting for axed Grayson’s replacement and Coisty is interested.
Asked if he’d consider the Sunderland gig, he said: “Of course. Why would you not?

McCoist during his time at Sunderland
“Sunderland is a fantastic club. It is a brilliant club and a place very, very close to my heart. I’ve had season tickets since I left, at Roker Park and the Stadium of Light. It is a great club.
“I actually feel the north east for football in particular is one of THE places in the United Kingdom. I sense the Sunderland fans for the first time I can remember have lost a bit of heart and a little bit of belief.
“The numbers there are dwindling so it’s massively important that Sunderland get it right.”
O’Neill’s sterling work for Northern Ireland was admired by Sunderland — but he told them he wasn’t interested.
Barnsley gaffer Paul Heckingbottom and McCoist could now come into Bain’s thinking.
Although Sunderland, currently bottom of the Championship, could still make a second attempt to land top target O’Neill.
Despite being approached by Scotland, O’Neill is being offered a new deal by Northern Ireland — as he currently earns £500,000 a year.

The SFA have made an official approach for O’Neill
The IFA are understood to have told O’Neill he is free to discuss a move with any party, on the understanding they meet cash clauses in a contract which runs until 2020.
Former Scotland star Craig Burley has urged O’Neill to SNUB Scotland.
SFA chiefs want the Northern Ireland boss to replace Gordon Strachan and lead a Euro 2020 bid.
But 46-times capped Burley reckons O’Neill would be accepting a “poisoned chalice”.

He said: “I’m not sure it is the right job for Michael O’Neill. Some might say the Scotland job is a better job than Northern Ireland, but I don’t quite see it that way.
“They have not been at a tournament for 20 years and if something better comes along at club level, Michael should take it.
“Scotland has been a poisoned chalice for I don’t know how many bosses.”
