We all do but we are already paying as much in other benefits and this system has been shown to improve mental health, increase feelings of self-worth and eliminate 99% of the administration effort that is currently spent on our existing shambles of multiple systems, none of them talking to each other, with the accompanying stress on the claimants.

As the story indicates, if people weren't spending so much time fighting just to keep their heads above water, they can turn their ideas into jobs, go on courses, retrain, get qualifications, learn to drive, travel to interviews, afford some decent clothes to attend interviews etc etc etc and have more chance of finding meaningful work, that makes them happy. Anyone think this is a bad thing in the 21st century? We are expected to work for 50+ years these days, so surely we shodul be trying to find occupations for people that are halfway near what they enjoy doing!

Of course it would need trialling to get it right - look at Universal Credit for example which is generally a good idea - but is being so appallingly implemented it is crippling in financial terms for recipients and in PR terms a disaster for the DWP/HMRC and Government.

Or we could just stick to what has not worked for 30-40 years because it might be too risky and too hard to try something new Mad

Great idea basic income from now so the multi millionaires will still have their vast fortunes and the rest of us just keep ticking over. How do we afford a car or House or holiday? Because the basic will be for just that the basics to live. Let’s start with this journo going on basic income and the likes of Branson footballers politicians before we roll it out to the rest of us. Another way of looking at it is a binman ( no disrespect meant) being paid the same as a heart surgeon. Why would people study or go to University to better themselves when they’ll get a basic income?
