Costly

SUNDERLAND AFC midfielder David Meyler has picked up six points off the pitch after being caught speeding in Sunderland.

The 23-year-old, who has just gone on loan to Hull City, was snapped by a speed camera doing nearly 50mph in a 30mph zone.

His Mercedes was clocked by an automatic camera on Springwell Road, near Barnes Park, in April.

Irish-born Meyler was sent a letter offering him the chance to pay £60 fixed penalty, but failed to respond.

Instead he was hit with a £1,000 fine
by Sunderland Magistrates’ Court – which JPs judged to be one week of his monthly income.

Meyler, who joined SAFC in July 2008 for an undisclosed fee, did not have to appear at the city court on Tuesday.

Prosecutor Lee Poppett told the court that Meyler was caught doing 49mph in a 30mph zone.

His car’s details were sent to Northumbria Police’s Fixed Penalty Unit and a check with the DVLA revealed who the car was registered to.

The footballer, whose address was given in court as c/o SAFC VIP, Ledbury Road, Sunderland, admitted he was driving the car at the time of the offence.

A letter giving him the chance to pay a fine was sent out in May, but no reply was received, said Mr Poppett.

A check of his driving records revealed Meyler, who lives in Cleadon, already has three points on his licence for a speeding offence dating back to October, when he was also fined £1,000.

As well as the latest fine, magistrates ordered Meyler pay £80 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Six penalty points were imposed on his licence.

Black Cats’ history of driving charges

DAVID Meyler is one of several Sunderland players to have faced speeding charges during the past year.

Former loan striker Nicklas Bendtner, pictured below, was banned from driving for 56 days and fined £660 after being clocked driving at 103mph in his Porche.

Late for a flight, the Denmark international was caught on the Woolsington bypass, near Newcastle Airport, in December.

In March, Phil Bardsley was given a fine and six points after being caught speeding for the fourth time.

The defender – who has previously served two driving bans – was spotted by a traffic officer doing 72mph in a 50mph zone on the A690 through West Rainton, heading towards Durham.

And last month, new star striker Steven Fletcher was handed a six-month ban and fined £1,700 under the totting-up procedure.

The Scotland international was clocked on camera driving a Range Rover at 77mph on the M42/M6 Toll at Curdworth, in Warwickshire, on January 20, when a 50mph variable speed limit was in force.

Comm - lol!

Why doesn't the whole squad transfer their points over then we'd be safe.
