Watmore and Maja

Post  cyprussyd on 2017-09-24, 12:03 pm

How on earth have we reached the position where we are looking at two good but young players to save us.

And if and when they play at the SOL will the boo boys get at them at their first mistake.

Me too, they have both become world class players since they have been injured and there is already far too much expectation on them. It is a concern as I have never seen a player, with an injury like Watmore's, come back and be able to play to their full potental until at least 3 months after their first game back, or even longer.

Alas Syd, that is the way it is...

I started going to matches in 1957 .... and it was rife then......

But we have no rioting !

I fear it will get worse as there are no signs that results  (the catalyst) will improve very soon.

Won one, lost five.

Less than a goal per game.

That's a lot of ground to make up before we are even on an even keel.

During October we face Brentford and Bolton.     The other 'B' needs to be sorted.... BASICS.

Grayson will not be sacked.
We can't afford the severance....

But something has to change, very very quickly..

We have to be careful with Watmore.

The league is very physical.

We don't want the lad being put out of the game permanently with a rash tackle...

Latest news on Watmore from the Chronicle website. Glad to see Grayson is not rushing him back no matter how desperately we need him.

The second bit about Ethan Robson is encouraging, although I suspect Grayson knows he has no choice but to blood the youngsters, given how thin our senior squad is. But you know what - if we unearth a little unknown gem what do you think will happen come summer or even January? Other clubs sniff around and we sell on to help 'reduce the debt' Who would be surprised eh?

Sunderland's Duncan Watmore set to take another step on the comeback trail today

Duncan Watmore is due to play for Sunderland U23s against West Ham at Eppleton this lunchtime as he builds towards a first-team return

Duncan Watmore is set to take another step towards a first-team return when he plays for Sunderland’s U23s against West Ham at Eppleton this lunchtime (noon).
The forward is slated to play at least 45 minutes as the Black Cats take on the Hammers in Premier League 2, eight days after scoring on his comeback for the U23s at Manchester City after nine months out of action following cruciate ligament surgery.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] boss Simon Grayson desperately needs Watmore back in the first-team fold to boost his side’s flagging fortunes, with yesterday’s defeat at the hands of Cardiff City seeing them slide into the Championship relegation zone.
But he is determined not to risk rushing Watmore back after such a serious injury, and expects the 23-year-old will not be ready to start league games until the middle of October when the Championship season resumes after the international break.

Grayson said: “[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] came through that game [against Man City] fine. We had a plan this week of what training he would do and we have stuck to that.
“He will hopefully get another 45-60 minutes on Sunday for the U23s against West Ham and we’ll see where we go from there.
“Of course I’d like to be pushing the medical team to have him back with me, but as I said last week I’m not going to take any risks with him and his livelihood. We’ve got a plan of action which we are going to stick to, and hopefully he will be back with us sooner rather than later because his return will be a massive boost for everybody.”

Grayson gave 20-year-old midfielder Ethan Robson his senior debut in the midweek Carabao Cup defeat at Everton, and followed that by handing him his league debut in the defeat against Cardiff - both appearances coming from the bench.
And [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] says he has been impressed by the academy graduate, who captains the U23 side.
He said: “I’ve liked what I have seen. Ethan played quite a few pre-season games for us and has been doing well for the U23s.
“It was going to be a toss-up between him and Elliot Embleton as to who was going to be involved [at Everton], and Ethan had done well in our last few sessions and in the games he had been involved so I gave him the opportunity.
“I didn’t know that he hadn’t made his debut, to be honest.
“As he came on, I asked him if this was his debut and he just had this big grin on his face and he said ‘yeah’.
“It’s a night he will never forget. I remember making my own debut at 17 years old – although I got cramp after 65 minutes and had to come off!
“But for Ethan it was a proud moment for him and his family.
“He’s made that step, and now he has to try and push the first-team players.
“He’s not there to make up the numbers, he’s there to be a part of it and affect the team.”

As I have said previously...Watmore has never been a prolific goalscorer and Maja looked good in the friendlies but has never played a game at this level...
if the fans believe these two coming back signal an avalanche of goals they will be disappointed...don't get me wrong I believe both will make a difference to our team...will they be booed? no...but I bet they're described as s***e by some of our our narrow minded "fans" as soon as they miss a chance

I obviously hope they do but know they won't...watmore is mediocre at best and Maja is untested at this or any level of the pro game really. Anyway, they would just be sold in January if any good.

Watmore got 70 minutes in yesterday, i think he could make the 1st team squad in 1 of the next 2 fixtures.
I wouldn't want to bring him back into a home game for obvious reasons, hope Simon feels the same.

Saleable asset so gone when fit and just getting into his stride, probably to one of the teams around us in January.
