Sunderland players 'devastated' by club's slump, says Simon Grayson
Sunderland's defeat against Sheffield United was their third reverse in a row, and boss Simon Grayson insists his players share the fans' frustrations

Sunderland’s players are ‘devastated’ at the Black Cats’ alarming slump, according to Simon Grayson.
The Wearsiders’ 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sheffield United at the Stadium of Light was their third successive reverse, and - just as in the 3-0 loss at Barnsley a fortnight ago - many fans turned on the team, chanting ‘You’re not fit to wear the shirt’.

Grayson shares the supporters’ frustration but insists that every single one of his players care about the club’s plight, and he has urged everyone to stick together to ride out the storm.
“I do understand the frustration of the supporters, and the players are frustrated as well,” said Grayson .
“They do care. There’s not an individual in that group that I have just left down there [in the dressing room] that is not affected.

“It’s just the confidence that is the problem.
“I get supporters feeling frustrated and saying what they say at times.
“But this is a new group of players. This isn’t the group that has contributed to relegation and other things, this is a new group that is desperate to be here, to work hard, and to get performances.

“There’s not one player down there that isn’t devastated by what is going on.
“We’re in this together and we all have to stick together, supporters, players, staff - we have to try and ride out the storm of a bit of negativity.”

Grayson only took over as manager at the end of June, but the problems that have ground Sunderland fans down to the point that they are quick to turn on the players date back years.
Grayson said: “There’s a frustration amongst the players, the staff, and the supporters, but ultimately there’s only one way to get out of it - you stick your chest out, you can’t bury your head in the sand, you roll your sleeves up and work hard and do whatever is required to get over this obstacle that has been in place for a number of years now.
“We will do that, I am certain.”
