Hmm or compared to last season when we were very poor, we no longer have a quality striker and our quality keeper has been replaced by 2 average ones.

Yes some dross has left (still stuck with Roswell until his contract finishes I guess)

Mcgready could be good not sure who else and most glaringly no striker of ability!

Short is killing the club, we desperately need him to sell to somebody with dosh who will invest in players

I hope Grayson will work out but he also stated he wanted a striker and has not got one

Well I am pleased with who we got in and pleased Djilibodji and Khazri have gone. I am pleased we did not get Colback, back, and that we held on to our two quality players in N'Dong and Kone, even if we missed out on a striker. But we are not the only team that have looked for a goalscorer this transfer window and failed.

We now have a squad of relatively young grafters and players who showed promise in the past who maybe lost their way through injury or other issues. So as others have said they will work very hard, knowing they have a lot to prove, to themselves as much as the footballing world.

We also have Maja,  Watmore and McNair to come back in next few weeks I hope. They should be able to make a difference in this league.

All in all pretty happy Very Happy

Agreed. I'll just say what I said on another thread:

I think we all would have liked to have seen a striker come in but hey ho that's the way it is and I'm sure Grayson will have his positive head on and get on with it. We've now got a lot more creativity in the team. More so than last year so things are looking up on that front. Last year we had a striker but no-one that could create chances for him. This year I reckon we'll see a few regular scorers with less reliance on one person.

We know what we've got now. Let's get behind them. With the right attitude and the right support this squad will perform.

It seems I'm not alone in this view (from Football League World):

Sunderland have been criticised, lambasted, and written off on so many occasions this summer, but on the final day of the summer window, new boss Simon Grayson has conducted some excellent business.
The Black Cats has looked beleaguered following their relegation from the Premier League, and their managerial search appeared to take an age, leading many to question what was happening behind the scenes at the Stadium of Light.
Grayson was poached from Preston, and it must be said that the former Leeds United boss has conducted himself in an excellent manner following his arrival.
Heading into transfer deadline day, the squad on Wearside could have been argued to have looked a little light, but Grayson has swooped for top flight quality, and the additions of Callum McManaman and Jonny Williams will go a long way towards helping Sunderland achieve their goals this season.
Winger McManaman had impressed at Wigan, playing a key role as the Latics lifted the FA Cup in 2013, as he was named Man of the Match in the final against heavy favourites, Manchester City.

Now on loan from West Brom, the 26-year-old will excel under Grayson, and fans can expect the player to cause problems for opposition defences, laying on the goals for his team mates in the box.
Jonny Williams is another shrewd acquisition, with the classy Crystal Palace midfielder sure to impress at this level once again.
The 17-cap Welsh international will slot straight into the midfield at the Stadium of Light, and appears to now be over a series of injuries which have blighted his career.
Grayson will receive criticism today for not adding another striker to his squad, with the likes of Jordan Rhodes and Ross McCormack both touted with a move to the north east in the final days of the window.
However the shrewd acquisitions of Williams and McManaman will silence some of Grayson’s critics, with the manager now being able to fully focus his attentions of a promotion push, when the Championship resumes after the international break.

Back to pre season for me.

I'll be happy with comfortable mid table till Chrimbo.

Then if we are knocking on the door some investment may be released.

If we are nearer the bottom, get out the prayer mats....

We may have new owners by then of course.

Que Sera ..

I  have  always expected mid table and don't blame Baines or GraydGrayson.
Both are here to clean up the mess others made and IMO have done wonders with the funds they have.
Short will go when he goes so forget him and back the manager and team.

Grayson wanted competition for places and he has got it, not one person in that squad can expect to be picked, they will have to fight for a starting berth and that includes Kone, Catts, Ndong and Vaughan.

It will be interesting to see which formation he uses and has the flexibility to change I around. Wouldn't be surprised to see Wilson used in front of the back four as a genuine holding midfielder. This will put more pressure on midfielders to get in the side, nice to see a creative player like williams who can also play behind a striker. Wingers!!! With pace and trickery and as others have said, Watmore, McNair and Maja to add to the squad too.

An extra striker would have been a bonus, but my glass is more than half full

An excellent assessment of the squad and how Grayson might use it.

Not for me this easy pleasure lark and, not sure where all this competition for places is coming from. We have brought in another two wingers (their favoured position) and a defensive midfielder/defender. More loans that will go back when their time is up whether they were good, bad or indifferent. We also got in a freebie who no one else in the league wanted. Add to that Williams injury record, (fair play because he gets stuck in) and, we have not improved we have just added more sub standard players to our already sub standard squad. We were never going to do much this year so maybe these are stop gap signings to keep us up, that for me is the reality of our situation. Defence is okay ish, midfield is crying out for a creative midfielder not more wingers and a defensive midfielder, attack is well short on quality and goals and, without both those together our strikers can run all day but, we won't be winning games.
Short was never going to spend anywhere near what is needed so unfortunately these sort of players are the best we can hope for, God ( or whichever mythical being you believe in) help us.
