underland flop Papy Djilobodji is the latest player to depart Wearside today, joining up with French Ligue 1 side Dijon FCO on a loan until the end of the current season.
The central defender has found himself completely out of the first team plans of Simon Grayson, and he joins up with the Ligue 1 side on the back of what has been a completely disastrous spell since arriving last summer from Chelsea.
In a statement on Dijon’s official website, the club have announced that the deal does not include an option to buy, meaning that it’s likely he’ll return back to the club next summer.
Club President Olivier Delcourt, pictured below with Djilobodji, says he’s pleased to have been able to secure the deal after their persuit took several weeks.
He exclaimed:
It was a priority for several weeks. We are therefore very pleased to have finalized this transfer. Papy has undeniable qualities and will bring us his experience. Little wink of fate, in 2009, he had hesitated between Nantes and Dijon. This time, it is indeed DFCO!

Djilobodji’s comical display against Carlisle United in the Carabao Cup appears to have been the final straw for Grayson and, in sanctioning a move to allow Djilobodji to leave, he frees up some funds and wages which can go towards further reinforcements.
This now means that Sunderland are seeking to replace the Senegalese defender before the transfer window closes this evening, and Skysports News have claimed that we’ve seen a £1m bid for Aston Villa defender Tommy Elphick rejected.
Elphick, a former Bournemouth captain, is out of Steve Bruce’s plans at Villa Park following the summer signings of John Terry and Chris Samba. He has been continually linked with a move to Sunderland over the last month or so but with funds tight there has been little to no movement - something that the club will be keen to resolve before the window firmly shuts at 11pm this evening.
Elphick’s experience at this level will be welcome to a Sunderland back line that sorely needs it. Having failed to keep a clean sheet in any of our games so far this season it’s key that suitable defensive reinforcements are made before time runs out today, and whilst money is tight it would be fair to concede that Elphick would represent a decent piece of business, provided we can get that one over the line.
