Sunderland will this week step-up their pursuit of Jordan Hugill and Ross McCormack after earning funds from the sale of Jeremain Lens.
However, the Black Cats have passed up the opportunity to re-sign academy graduate Martyn Waghorn, who has joined Ipswich Town instead.

Although the exact figures and payment structure are not known, Sunderland have received a fee for Dutch winger Lens and also got his wages off the books as he joined Besiktas this weekend.
Simon Grayson has been keen to reunite with striker McCormack all summer, having worked successfully with him at Leeds.
Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce has already admitted that the 30-year-old can leave the club this summer, with the two clubs locked in negotiations.
Sunderland appear to be leading the race for the Scottish striker but so far the finances of the deal have just proven too much for Sunderland.
The hope is that funds raised from Lens’ departure will help accelerate that one this week.
Meanwhile, Grayson is also looking for a bigger targetman for his frontline and is ready to raid former club Preston to land Hugill.
The big striker netted 13 goals for North End last season under the new Sunderland boss and was a focal point of Preston’s attack as he held the ball up and brought attacking players around him into play.
The Lancashire outfit won’t want to lose the 25-year-old and have already knocked back two bids from Birmingham, but again the Lens sale should help the Black Cats.

Another striker Grayson had considered was South Shields-born Waghorn.

The player has left Rangers on the cheap with just a year remaining on his contract this summer.
However, the Sunderland boss decided against bringing him back to Wearside to step-up his pursuits of McCormack and Hugill instead.

Waghorn has joined Ipswich in a £1million deal where he’ll play under an ex-Sunderland manager in Mick McCarthy.
