Simon Grayson has named his first competitive starting XI as Sunderland manager, ahead of tonight’s Sky Bet Championship opener against Derby County.
Six of the club’s summer signings start at the Stadium of Light, with Jason Steele, Ty Browning, Brendan Galloway, Aiden McGeady, Lewis Grabban and James Vaughan facing the Rams.
Robbin Ruiter is on the bench after completing his move to Wearside just 48 hours ago.
And familiar faces also start at the SoL with Lamine Kone and Billy Jones completing the back four, as Lee Cattermole and Didier Ndong are tasked with bossing the midfield.
George Honeyman is also handed a start berth.
Sunderland: Steele, Jones, Kone, Browning, Galloway, Cattermole, Ndong, Honeyman, McGeady, Grabban, Vaughan.
Substitutes: Ruiter, O’Shea, Matthews, Gibson, Gooch, Khazri, Asoro.

Decent enough performance for a season opener and a newish team.

Was a good game and probably we deserved to win but happy enough with a draw for first outing.

My observations:

Catts was everywhere and had more shots than I have ever seen him have. He looked really fit and was Sky's, and my, MOTM.

We had pace all over the pitch and it made for an exciting game.

Vaughan, Grabban, Honeyman and N'Dong impressed me and I was pleased and surprised that Kone looked back to his best.

We did not make any subs which I thought was a bit odd.

Will the shorter and narrower pitch have a positve or negative effect over the season?

20 shots with 4 on target seems the most we have had in years (probably not, but it just feels like that)

If Derby are one of the favourites for promotion I would say so are we on this showing.

I enjoyed a match for the first time in AGES!

Onwards and upwards Very Happy

Me too, and don't want to detract from what was a much better performance than I expected, but if that's the level of officials we're going to have this season, think I'll be filling the swear box up

Good start and I feel it will get better!

McGeady plays better with a free role, but not sure how we accommodate that. He was quieter in the second half because he was helping Galloway. Some interesting choices when all fit like Khazri, Watmore, Maja and McNair ..... And another forward to come in.

If Kone goes, we need a solid centre back because I think O'Shea would be exposed to pace.

As I said, it will get better and Vaughan to score against Bury!!

Re: Sunderland AFC v Derby County-Match Day Thread

Post  cyprussyd on 2017-08-04, 10:52 pm

Simon Grayson paid homage to his players commitment and endeavour following their opening day draw against Derby County tonight.

Sunderland began life in the Sky Bet Championship this evening, eyeing an immediate return to the top-flight as Grayson started six of his seven new signings.
And he would’ve been pleased with the opening exchanges as new boys Lewis Grabban and Aiden McGeady went close early on raising the roof in a high octane first 10 minutes.
But Derby dealt the hosts gruel blow, Bradley Johnson ramming the ball home at the back post after Johnny Russell got the better of Brendan Galloway down the left flank.
Sunderland dusted themselves down though, and swiftly struck back through Grabban who confidently dispatched a penalty following a hand ball.
Grabban was then denied by the post in the second period before James Vaughan shaved the outside of the opposition post as the lads went in search of a winner that sadly, never came.
Speaking post-match, Grayson praised the attitude of his players.
“I’m really pleased because we were up against a tough opposition,” he said.
“The basics we asked the players to do tonight were there for everybody to see. We had to work, chase and stop the opposition from playing and when we got the opportunities we played quite well.
“We passed it round quite well and their keeper made some exceptional saves but the biggest thing for me was when we conceded the first goal after such a strong start from us we didn’t crumble.
“We didn’t feel sorry for ourselves and we really dug deep and got back on the front foot.
“You are going to suffer goals and disappointment and we made sure before we went out that any disappointment on the pitch didn’t affect us.
“That’s what we did so I’m really pleased with the attitude and commitment of the players,” he continued.
“It was probably refreshing for the supporters to see today. We all go away quite happy, disappointed we didn’t win the game because if any team deserved to win it today it was us.”

I watched the game sitting alongside my mag mates.

I was very, very happy with the performance and pleasantly surpried.

Impressed with Catts.
I think this is his level and he could have a great season.

A learning cirve for the left back who allowed the cross which led to the goal.

But a new team getting used to each other did well.
We should be safe this season do you think ?

Derby opener scored by former Norwich player Bradley Johnson.

Sunderland penalty conceded by former Norwich player Jacob Butterfield.

Sunderland penalty scored by former Norwich player Lewis Grabban!

I can see a recurring theme here!   Very Happy

My view we actually tried hard and players put the effort In. Several players including Kone  (gasp)  played well.

There goal was awful, is Galloway PvA in disguise, in that he is good going forward but poor in defending.

Still heads did not go down and we made several good chances, mind they missed a couple of sitters.

Forwards hmmm Vaughan ran about a lot and as they say got stuck in...so positive...however he needs to find the scoring touch asap. A proven quality striker still required.

Steele was not at fault for there goal but did spill a catch. We have a keeper to come in.

Some good stuff then, but not a win.

Short if he gives Larry some funds looks as if he knows what he is doing. No subs either

Oviedo will be first choice when fit

But did not lose despite many predicting we would
