Report: Boost for Sunderland as Premier League-linked Joel Asoro decides on future

Everton and Arsenal were linked with Sunderland forward Joel Asoro but it appears he will be staying at the Stadium of Light

With Sunderland’s present looking decidedly worrying, at least the supporters had the hope of a brighter future to cling on to.
The Black Cats aren’t exactly renowned for a prosperous youth system. But with Lyden Gooch, George Honeyman and, above all, Joel Asoro on the verge of regular first-team action, the presence of a few homegrown heroes in the starting XI at least promises to give the fans something to cheer about.
And, in the midst of a distressing summer in which not one senior player has been brought in to compensate for a raft of departures, Asoro seemingly committing his future to Sunderland could hardly have come at a better time.
The Chronicle claims that the 18-year-old Swede, who was one of the youngest players at this summer’s European Under-21 Championships in Poland, is keen to stay at the Stadium of Light in the hope of forcing his way into the senior international set-up ahead of next year’s World Cup.
Asoro became Sunderland’s youngest ever Premier League player when coming off the bench in a 2-1 home defeat to Middlesbrough in August last year. However, that was his only appearance in the senior side in 2016/17 despite former manager David Moyes singing his praises on occasions.
Big season ahead
Yet, new manager Simon Grayson has indicated that the threadbare nature of his squad could make the club’s young stars a crucial part of his plans next season, suggesting that opportunities will be more forthcoming for Asoro.
According to the Sunderland Echo, the Stockholm-born forward had caught the eye of an Everton side on the lookout for Europe’s most exciting young talent after earning a nomination for the prestigious Golden Boy award as well as the Premier League 2 Player of the Season gong.
The report added that Arsenal had made a £5 million bid for Asoro and fellow Sunderland and Sweden starlet Benjamin Mbunga-Kimpioka.
However, it appears that, for once, Sunderland will hang onto their prized asset.

That is very big of him , not .
Maybe no one actually wanted him and he and his agent have had to back off , well all it has done in my book is put him back a square or two until he proves he is actually worth the shirt .
Looks like he may have learnt from the old pros like his national mate Larsson , and that is not a good thing .

Good news indeed, I don't share cretans view because if he wanted out he could have gone with a few clubs happy to take him so well done from me.

I could have supported Newcastle and be deluded. Instead I chose Sunderland and became depressed.

I agree. So he made a few noises earlier on about where his future should lie. So what? We've all been saying for ages what a basket case this club is. Is he supposed to think differently to everyone else? He just wanted to see what the new manager's views were on him and the younger players getting a chance and it seems like they will be given opportunity. The kid just wants to play and good on him. I reckon he'll develop into a great player for us.

Not seen this lad play...has anyone?

I believe he is Defoe' s build?

We will still need a big lad up front...and to ease this young man in gradually

Saw him in the under 23 final. Clearly got a lot of skill although you're absolutely right - he will need a big lad to work alongside him.

It would never do for us to agree on matters SAFC , however I hope he is your kinda guy and not the one I believe him to be . Either way as of yet he has shown nothing at first team level so over to him and Simon .
